DEVOTIONAL PRAYER FOR NOVEMBER
For All the Faithful Departed

Almighty Father, You made everyone in your own image and likeness, and when that image was defaced by sin, you restored it through Christ:

Hear our prayers, we pray you, for all our brothers and sisters who have gone to their rest in the hope of the resurrection, and show them the glory of your face. Through Christ our Lord.

Amen

Entrance Antiphon
The Lord said: I think thoughts of peace and not of affliction. You will call upon me, and I will answer you, and I will lead back your captives from every place.

1st Reading (Prov 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31)
A reading from the book of Proverbs.
A perfect wife – who can find her?   She is far beyond the price of pearls. Her husband’s heart has confidence in her, from her he will derive no little profit. Advantage and not hurt she brings him all the days of her life. She is always busy with wool and with flax, she does her work with eager hands. She sets her hands to the distaff, her fingers grasp the spindle. She holds out her hand to the poor, she opens her arms to the needy. Charm is deceitful, and beauty empty; the woman who is wise is the one to praise. Give her a share in what her hands have worked for, and let her works tell her praises at the city gates.
The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm
Happy are those who fear the Lord.

2nd Reading (1 Thess 5:1-6)
You will not be expecting us to write anything to you, brothers, about ‘times and seasons’, since you know very well that the Day of the Lord is going to come like a thief in the night. It is when people are saying, ‘How quiet and peaceful it is’ that the worst suddenly happens, as suddenly as labour pains come on a pregnant woman; and there will be no way for anybody to evade it. But it is not as if you live in the dark, my brothers, for that Day to overtake you like a thief. No, you are all sons of light and sons of the day: we do not belong to the night or to darkness, so we should not go on sleeping, as everyone else does, but stay wide awake and sober.
The Word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia! Live in me and let me live in you says the Lord, my branches bear much fruit. Alleluia!

Gospel (Mt 25:14-30)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.
Jesus spoke this parable to his disciples: ‘The kingdom of Heaven is like a man on his way abroad who summoned his servants and entrusted his property to them. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to a third one; each in proportion to his ability. Then he set out. ‘The man who had received the five talents promptly went and traded with them and made five more. The man who had received two made two more in the same way. But the man who had received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. ‘Now a long time after, the master of those servants came back and went through his accounts with them. The man who had received the five talents came forward bringing five more. “Sir,” he said “you entrusted me with five talents; here are five more that I have made.” ‘His master said to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you have shown you can be faithful in small things, I will trust you with greater; come and join in your master’s happiness.” ‘Next the man with the two talents came forward. “Sir,” he said “you entrusted me with two talents; here are two more that I have made.” His master said to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you have shown you can be faithful in small things, I will trust you with greater; come and join in your master’s happiness.” ‘Last came forward the man who had the one talent. “Sir,” said he “I had heard you were a hard man, reaping where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered; so I was afraid, and I went off and hid your talent in the ground. Here it is; it was yours, you have it back.” But his master answered him, “You wicked and lazy servant! So you knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered? Well then, you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have recovered my capital with interest. So now, take the talent from him and give it to the man who has the five talents. For to everyone who has will be given more, and he will have more than enough; but from the man who has not, even what he has will be taken away. As for this good-for-nothing servant, throw him out into the dark, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.”’
The Gospel of the Lord.

Communion Antiphon
To be near God is my happiness, to place my hope in God the Lord.

Entrance Antiphon
Let my prayer come into your presence. Incline your ear to my cry for help, O Lord.

1st Reading (Wis 6:12-16)
A reading from the book of Wisdom.
Wisdom is bright, and does not grow dim. By those who love her she is readily seen, and found by those who look for her. Quick to anticipate those who desire her, she makes herself known to them. Watch for her early and you will have no trouble; you will find her sitting at your gates. Even to think about her is understanding fully grown; be on the alert for her and anxiety will quickly leave you. She herself walks about looking for those who are worthy of her and graciously shows herself to them as they go, in every thought of theirs coming to meet them.
The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm
My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.

2nd Reading (1 Thess 4:13-18)
A reading from the first letter of St. Paul to the Thessalonians.
We want you to be quite certain, brothers, about those who have died, to make sure that you do not grieve about them, like the other people who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and that it will be the same for those who have died in Jesus: God will bring them with him. We can tell you this from the Lord’s own teaching, that any of us who are left alive until the Lord’s coming will not have any advantage over those who have died. At the trumpet of God, the voice of the archangel will call out the command and the Lord himself will come down from heaven; those who have died in Christ will be the first to rise, and then those of us who are still alive will be taken up in the clouds, together with them; to meet the Lord in the air. So we shall stay with the Lord for ever. With such thoughts as these you should comfort one another.
The Word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia! Be watchful and ready: you know not when the Son of Man is coming. Alleluia!

Gospel (Mt 25:1-13)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.
Jesus told this parable to his disciples: ‘The kingdom of heaven will be like this: Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were sensible: the foolish ones did take their lamps, but they brought no oil, whereas the sensible ones took flasks of oil as well as their lamps. The bridegroom was late, and they all grew drowsy and fell asleep. But at midnight there was a cry, “The bridegroom is here! Go out and meet him.” At this, all those bridesmaids woke up and trimmed their lamps, and the foolish ones said to the sensible ones, “Give us some of your oil: our lamps are going out.” But they replied, “There may not be enough for us and for you; you had better go to those who sell it and buy some for yourselves.” They had gone off to buy it when the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in with him to the wedding hall and the door was closed. The other bridesmaids arrived later. “Lord, Lord,” they said “open the door for us.” But he replied, “I tell you solemnly, I do not know you.” So stay awake, because you do not know either the day or the hour.’
The Gospel of the Lord.

Communion Antiphon
The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose, near restful waters he leads me.

PARABLE OF THE TEN BRIDESMAIDS
(Reflection by Dcn. Charles English)

The parable of the foolish and wise bridesmaids, is about the need for a lively faith, and preparing ourselves for the coming of the kingdom, that makes one ready to welcome it at any time. In this parable the danger, highlighted by Our Lord, is carelessness in providing for ourselves the spiritual things we need, to be ready for the kingdom.

In this parable, the context is about delay and uncertainty about when the bridegroom was coming, division within the group, careless behaviour in some of the bridesmaids and prudent readiness in others.

The task of the ten bridesmaids is to welcome the bridal couple, and joyfully escort them with lighted lamps to the wedding feast inside the wedding hall. Failure to anticipate a delay makes five of them unready when the time arrives, and they are not there when the bridegroom arrives. The foolish, unprepared bridesmaids hammer on the locked door, crying out ‘Lord, Lord open the door for us’, but he replied ‘I tell you solemnly, I do not know you’. These five foolish bridesmaids are like foolish Christians, whose lives are not solidly founded on true faith in Christ Jesus. Our Lord is warning us all, in this parable, that we are to be always watchful and ready to welcome the Bridegroom, Our Lord Jesus Christ. We are to be prepared spiritually for when our pilgrim journey on this earth is over and then we will meet God face to face and have our final judgement. This parable is a jolt to us, a big reminder to us, a stop and think moment, that it is our eternal salvation that is at stake.

How do we prepare ourselves for meeting God face to face? We prepare ourselves by saying our daily prayers, morning, noon and night. By turning to God each day and giving Him thanks and praise for all our blessings. By attending holy Mass each Sunday, and receiving the sacraments of Confession and Holy Communion. By trying to follow the teachings of Jesus and living out, in our lives, the message of the gospel. By being kind to others, and forgiving others and putting up with one another with patience and understanding. We have to make sure that our lamps are always burning brightly. Therefore we must keep on putting oil into them. That oil is the close and loving relationship that we have with Our Lord Jesus, that keeps our lamp (the soul) burning with love for Christ and His holy Catholic Church.

As Catholics, we are all called to be the bearers of the light of Christ, lamp-carriers if you like.

Let us heed the warning of Our Lord, in this parable, that we must never let our lamps grow dim or even go out.

This parable today urges us to stay awake, to be always vigilant about the state of our immortal soul, for we do not know the day nor the hour when our earthly journey will come to an end.

Let us remember that it is so joyful for us to be invited to the wedding feast in Heaven, to be with the Bridegroom, Our Lord Jesus, forever.

“The Spirit and the Bride says, ‘Come’. Let everyone who listens answer, ‘Come’.

Our Lady, health of the sick, pray for us.
St. Peter Apostle, pray for us.

Entrance Antiphon
Let us rejoice in the Lord, as we celebrate the feast day in honour of all the Saints, at whose festival the Angels rejoice and praise the Son of God.

1st Reading (Apoc 7:2-4,9-14)
A reading from the book of Apocalypse.
I, John, saw another angel rising where the sun rises, carrying the seal of the living God; he called in a powerful voice to the four angels whose duty was to devastate the land and sea, “Wait before you do any damage on land or at sea or to the trees, until we have put the seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God.” Then I heard how many were sealed: a hundred and forty-four thousand out of all the tribes of Israel. After that I saw a huge number, impossible to count, of people from every nation, race, tribe and language: they were standing in front of the throne and in front of the Lamb, dressed in white robes and holding palms in their hands. They shouted aloud,“Victory to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” And all the angels who were standing in a circle round the throne, surrounding the elders and the four animals, prostrated themselves before the throne, and touched the ground with their foreheads, worshipping God with the words: “Amen. Praise and glory, and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and strength to our God forever and ever. Amen.” One of the elders then spoke and asked me, “Do you know who these people are, dressed in white robes, and where they have come from?” I answered him, “You can tell me, my lord.” Then he said, “These are the people who have been through the great persecution, and they have washed their robes white again in the blood of the Lamb.”
The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm
Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face.

2nd Reading (1 Jn 3:1-3)
A reading from the first letter of St. John.
Think of the love that the Father has lavished on us, by letting us be called God’s children; and that is what we are. Because the world refused to acknowledge him, therefore it does not acknowledge us; My dear people, we are already the children of God but what we are to be in the future has not yet been revealed; all we know is, that when it is revealed we shall be like him because we shall see him as he really is. Surely everyone who entertains this hope must purify himself, must try to be as pure as Christ.
The Word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia! Come to me, all you that labour and are burdened, and I will give you rest, says the Lord. Alleluia!

Gospel (Mt 5:1-12)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.
Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up the hill. There he sat down and was joined by his disciples. Then he began to speak. This is what he taught them: How happy are the poor in spirit; theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Happy the gentle: they shall have the earth for their heritage; Happy those who mourn: they shall be comforted; Happy those who hunger and thirst for what is right: they shall be satisfied; Happy the merciful: they shall have mercy shown them; Happy the pure in heart: they shall see God; Happy the peacemakers: they shall be called sons of God; Happy those who are persecuted in the cause of right: theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Happy are you when people abuse you and persecute you and speak all kinds of calumny against you on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.
The Gospel of the Lord.

Communion Antiphon
Blessed are the clean of heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

“FRATELLI TUTTI”: SHORT SUMMARY OF POPE FRANCIS’S SOCIAL ENCYCLICAL
Fraternity and social friendship are the ways the Pontiff indicates to build a better, more just and peaceful world, with the contribution of all: people and institutions. With an emphatic confirmation of a ‘no’ to war and to globalized indifference.
By Isabella Piro

What are the great ideals but also the tangible ways to advance for those who wish to build a more just and fraternal world in their ordinary relationships, in social life, politics and institutions?

This is mainly the question that Fratelli tutti is intended to answer: the Pope describes it as a “Social Encyclical” (6) which borrows the title of the “Admonitions” of Saint Francis of Assisi, who used these words to “address his brothers and sisters and proposed to them a way of life marked by the flavour of the Gospel” (Par 1). The Encyclical aims to promote a universal aspiration toward fraternity and social friendship. In the background of the Encyclical is the Covid-19 pandemic which, Francis reveals, “unexpectedly erupted” as he “was writing this letter”. But the global health emergency has helped demonstrate that “no one can face life in isolation” and that the time has truly come to “dream, then, as a single human family” in which we are “brothers and sisters all” (Par 8).

DEVOTIONAL PRAYER FOR OCTOBER
CORONAVIRUS PRAYER

God our Father, we come to You in our need, to ask Your protection against the COVID-19 that has disturbed and even claimed lives.

We pray that You guide the people tasked to find cures for this disease and to stem its transmission.

Protect the medical experts that they may minister to the sick with competence and compassion.

We pray for those afflicted. May they be restored to health soon.

Protect those who care for them.

Grant eternal rest to those who have died.

Give us the grace in this trying time to work for the good of all and to help those in need.

We implore You to stop the spread of this virus and to save us from our fears.

Grant all these through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

We fly to Your protection, oh Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our petition in our  necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, Oh glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

Our Lady, health of the sick, pray for us.
St. Peter Apostle, pray for us.

Entrance Antiphon
Let the hearts that seek the Lord rejoice; turn to the Lord and his strength; constantly seek his face.

1st Reading (Ex 22:20-26)
A reading from the book of Exodus.
The Lord said to Moses, ‘Tell the sons of Israel this: ‘“You must not molest the stranger or oppress him, for you lived as strangers in the land of Egypt. You must not be harsh with the widow, or with the orphan; if you are harsh with them, they will surely cry out to me, and be sure I shall hear their cry; my anger will flare and I shall kill you with the sword, your own wives will be widows, your own children orphans. ‘“If you lend money to any of my people, to any poor man among you, you must not play the usurer with him: you must not demand interest from him. ‘“If you take another’s cloak as a pledge, you must give it back to him before sunset. It is all the covering he has; it is the cloak he wraps his body in; what else would he sleep in? If he cries to me, I will listen, for I am full of pity.”
The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm
I love you, Lord, my strength.

2nd Reading (1 Thes 1:5-10)
A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Thessalonians.
You observed the sort of life we lived when we were with you, which was for your instruction, and you were led to become imitators of us, and of the Lord; and it was with the joy of the Holy Spirit that you took to the gospel, in spite of the great opposition all round you. This has made you the great example to all believers in Macedonia and Achaia since it was from you that the word of the Lord started to spread – and not only throughout Macedonia and Achaia, for the news of your faith in God has spread everywhere. We do not need to tell other people about it: other people tell us how we started the work among you, how you broke with idolatry when you were converted to God and became servants of the real, living God; and how you are now waiting for Jesus, his Son, whom he raised from the dead, to come from heaven to save us from the retribution which is coming.
The Word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia! All who love me will keep my words, and my Father will love them and we will come to them. Alleluia!

Gospel (Mt 22:34-40)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees they got together and, to disconcert him, one of them put a question, ‘Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?’ Jesus said, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets also.’
The Gospel of the Lord.

Communion Antiphon
We will ring out our joy at your saving help, and exult in the name of our God.

PARISH NEWS

30TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A
THE GREATEST COMMANDMENT OF ALL
(Reflection by Dcn. Charles English)

Today’s Gospel sees a Pharisee, that is a Jewish theologian, approach Jesus to ask a question. He comes on behalf of the Pharisees to try and trap Jesus, regarding Jesus’ teaching. The Gospel tells us that Jesus had recently ‘silenced the Sadducees’, who were a group of religious Jews who did not believe in the resurrection of the dead. So the Pharisee comes to Jesus and addresses Jesus as teacher or rabbi and asks Jesus the following question:-

Of the 613 commandments found in the Law of Moses, which is the greatest?

The Pharisee hopes to trap Jesus into saying something contrary to the Law. And Jesus’ answer quotes two passages from the Law. Jesus first quotes from the Shema prayer, said by devout Jews daily. (Deut 6:4-5) This commands love for God with one’s whole heart, mind and soul.

The heart, for the Jewish people, was the centre of understanding, choosing and feeling; the mind the place of awareness; the soul the life energy of a person.

‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind’.

This commandment and prayer commands a life totally centred on God in responsive and trusting faith. This is the basis and the essential creed of Judaism. This is the sentence with which every Jewish religious service still opens, and the first text that every Jewish child memorises.

It means that to God we must give a total love, which directs our thoughts, our words and our actions. Complete love of God means that we are faithful to God’s commandments and laws and is the very core of the Old Testament, and this love and fidelity to God has been brought into the New Testament, by Jesus Himself in His teachings and His life, recorded in the gospels.

Jesus also quotes another part of the Law, the command ‘to love your neighbour as yourself’ (Leviticus 19:18). If we say that we love God then this love must issue forth in love for mankind, for others. It is to be noted in which order these two commandments come, it is the love of God first and then the love of mankind second.

The Biblical teaching is that man is created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27). It is for this reason that man has been raised above the animals and above all creation, and because we are made in the image of God that makes us lovable. We are not just human beings, we are children of God. The love, peace and glory of God should be shining forth from us. We should all try to be joyful Catholics. Disciples of the Resurrected Christ and we should always have the image of the Resurrected Christ before our eyes, every day of our life. If we can do this then we will never lose hope.

As St. Paul tells us, in his beautiful letter to the Corinthians; ‘Love is patient and kind. Love is never rude or selfish, it does not take offence. Love delights in the truth. Love is always ready to excuse, ready to trust, to hope and to endure whatever comes. Love does not come to an end‘. (1Cor 13:4-8).

‘And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love.
Yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love’.

Entrance Antiphon
To you I call; for you will surely heed me, O God; turn your ear to me; hear my words. Guard me as the apple of your eye; in the shadow of your wings protect me.

1st Reading (Is 45:1,4-6)
A reading from the prophet Isaiah.
Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whom he has taken by his right hand to subdue nations before him and strip the loins of kings, to force gateways before him that their gates be closed no more: ‘It is for the sake of my servant Jacob, of Israel my chosen one, that I have called you by your name, conferring a title though you do not know me. I am the Lord, unrivalled; there is no other God besides me. Though you do not know me, I arm you that men may know from the rising to the setting of the sun that, apart from me, all is nothing.’
The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm
Give the Lord glory and honour.

2nd Reading (1 Thes 1:1-5)
A reading from the first letter of St. Paul to the Thessalonians.
From Paul, Silvanus and Timothy, to the Church in Thessalonika which is in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ; wishing you grace and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. We always mention you in our prayers and thank God for you all, and constantly remember before God our Father how you have shown your faith in action, worked for love and persevered through hope, in our Lord Jesus Christ. We know, brothers, that God loves you and that you have been chosen, because when we brought the Good News to you, it came to you not only as words, but as power and as the Holy Spirit and as utter conviction.
The word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia! Shine on the world like bright stars; you are offering it the word of life. Alleluia!

Gospel (Mt 22:15-21)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.
The Pharisees went away to work out between them how to trap Jesus in what he said. And they sent their disciples to him, together with the Herodians, to say, ‘Master, we know that you are an honest man and teach the way of God in an honest way, and that you are not afraid of anyone, because a man’s rank means nothing to you. Tell us your opinion, then. Is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not?’ But Jesus was aware of their malice and replied, ‘You hypocrites! Why do you set this trap for me? Let me see the money you pay the tax with.’ They handed him a denarius, and he said, ‘Whose head is this? Whose name?’ ‘Caesar’s’ they replied. He then said to them, ‘Very well, give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar – and to God what belongs to God.’
The Gospel of the Lord.

Communion Antiphon
Behold the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, who hope in his merciful love, to rescue their souls from death, to keep them alive in famine.

PARISH NEWS

29TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A 2020
(Reflection by Fr. Vincent John CMI)

This Sunday’s Gospel is taken from Matthew where Jesus was asked a question related to the tax payment of his time to trap him. Jesus gave them a very wise and prudent answer, and reminded them of a life beyond earthly kingdoms. Here Jesus speaks of one’s dual citizenship: citizenship to an earthly kingdom and a heavenly kingdom, citizenship which ends with a physical death and the one which continues even after death. To answer the Herodians’ tricky question, Jesus uses a coin of earthly kingdom which they themselves had with them, and a heavenly obligation they had by their very existence.

Jesus, in the gospel, tells the Pharisees, to fulfil their heavenly and earthly obligations. In this story we see a peculiar element. Usually, Pharisees and Herodians were not on good terms. Herodians supported Herod’s right to tax while Pharisees opposed it. But here, to trap Jesus, these two groups came together. We need to remember that it is very hard to see two opposing groups coming together to do some good works, rather, they may work together to do evil. Belonging to God, we are created and called to be in His image. We are called to give to God what belongs to God while giving due respect and honour to our earthly legal powers and laws as loyal citizens. God deserves our worship, praise, adoration and gratitude.

We need to appreciate what God has given us. We are invited to look at our own lives, find the things we have received from God, and then we need to express our gratitude. It starts from our very life itself. It is God who selected our life which is a gift, not a chance or accidental one. God gave us His image, his divine grace, soul, talents, skills, protection, health, healing, strength, knowledge and nurtured us up to this level, leading us through different situations. He also allows limitations so we do not stray away and lose grace. Now, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we need to preserve our gifts and  blessings and share it with others with all our soul, mind, spirit, heart and strength. This is the way we give to God the things that are God’s.

Balancing our lives is essential as we are living in this world. We cannot ignore this world, the country we live in, and the culture we share. As Jesus said, no power comes to man unless it is given by God. When a situation of selecting one over the other occurs, we need to select God over earthly powers. Throughout Christian history we see hundreds of people who faithfully selected the heavenly kingdom over earthly power and became martyrs. We see the great example of Thomas More. He selected God’s law against the King’s law and sacrificed his own life for that. God has given us the law of love, faith and charity to become citizens of the kingdom of light. We give to God the things that are God’s only when we combine these three elements in our personal life, family life and social life. One without the other is incomplete. Let us always choose the kingdom of light so that when we appear before the Lord God, we will proudly give him back what he gave us. It is not a one-time selection but continuous process. But always Jesus stands before us offering His support with extended hands.
May God bless you.

Our Lady, health of the sick, pray for us.
St. Peter Apostle, pray for us.

Entrance Antiphon
If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But with you is found forgiveness, O God of Israel.

1st Reading (Is 25:6-10)
A reading from the prophet Isaiah.
On this mountain, the Lord of hosts will prepare for all peoples a banquet of rich food, a banquet of fine wines, of food rich and juicy, of fine strained wines. On this mountain he will remove the mourning veil covering all peoples, and the shroud enwrapping all nations, he will destroy Death for ever. The Lord will wipe away the tears from every cheek; he will take away his people’s shame everywhere on earth, for the Lord has said so. That day, it will be said: See, this is our God in whom we hoped for salvation; the Lord is the one in whom we hoped. We exult and we rejoice that he has saved us; for the hand of the Lord rests on this mountain.
The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm
I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.

2nd Reading (Phil 4:12-14,19-20)
A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Philippians.
I know how to be poor and I know how to be rich too. I have been through my initiation and now I am ready for anything anywhere: full stomach or empty stomach, poverty or plenty. There is nothing I cannot master with the help of the One who gives me strength. All the same, it was good of you to share with me in my hardships. In return my God will fulfil all your needs, in Christ Jesus, as lavishly as only God can. Glory to God, our Father, for ever and ever. Amen.
The Word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia! May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our heart, that we might see how great is the hope to which we are called. Alleluia!

Gospel (Mt 22:1-14)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.
Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people in parables: ‘The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a feast for his son’s wedding. He sent his servants to call those who had been invited, but they would not come. Next he sent some more servants. “Tell those who have been invited” he said “that I have my banquet all prepared, my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, everything is ready. Come to the wedding.” But they were not interested: one went off to his farm, another to his business, and the rest seized his servants, maltreated them and killed them. The king was furious. He despatched his troops, destroyed those murderers and burnt their town. Then he said to his servants, “The wedding is ready; but as those who were invited proved to be unworthy, go to the crossroads in the town and invite everyone you can find to the wedding.” So these servants went out on to the roads and collected together everyone they could find, bad and good alike; and the wedding hall was filled with guests. When the king came in to look at the guests he noticed one man who was not wearing a wedding garment, and said to him, “How did you get in here, my friend, without a wedding garment?” And the man was silent. Then the king said to the attendants, “Bind him hand and foot and throw him out into the dark, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.” For many are called, but few are chosen.’
The Gospel of the Lord.

Communion Antiphon
The rich suffer want and go hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no blessing.

PARABLE OF THE WEDDING FEAST
(Reflection by Dcn. Charles English)

Today’s Gospel tells us about some people who refused an invitation to a wedding feast, and others who accepted it. The historical context of Jesus’ Parable is quite clear; the first people to be invited to the wedding feast were the Jewish people, the Chosen people of God. Those from the roads or crossroads who accepted the king’s invitation, represent the Gentiles – that’s us. The banquet is the Kingdom of Heaven.

Once again, Jesus is telling another explosive parable in front of the Pharisees and elders of the Temple. It made the Jewish leaders very angry, because it implied that the Gentiles were about to occupy seats at the banquet, which they had always believed were reserved for themselves alone. This story or parable may seem a little far-fetched. Who would be so crazy as to turn down an invitation to a royal wedding? But people are foolish. There is a streak in us that not only refuses the good, but can’t even recognise it.

God is continually calling us, inviting us, as individuals and as members of Christ’s community, Catholics, to a deeper and better life. His call may be very gentle but it is very insistent and very real. We all hear it from time to time, coming mostly from deep within us. But, alas, so often this precious invitation from God Himself, is treated just like the seed that fell among the thorns. The seed gets choked by the thorns and dies off.

A brief look at our lives will show us that, from time to time, this is true.

  1. There is that letter or e-mail I know I should write, but just now I am not in the mood.
  2. There is a lonely or sick person that I know I should visit or telephone, but right now my favourite programme is on TV.
  3. There are those prayers I know I should say, but right now I’m too tired.
  4. I know I should be more charitable towards so and so, but she is not the easiest person in the world to get along with.
  5. I know that I am not doing my job as well as I should, but why should I break my back when others aren’t pulling their weight?
  6. I know I drink too much, but then I am under a lot of pressure these days.
  7. I know I should spend more time with my children, but I need that overtime money.

We could go on and on, and somewhere at some time there will be something that refers to us and our lives; something that we should be doing or something that we should not be doing. God is continually calling us to follow Him and is continually calling us to conversion.

It is important to note that in Jesus’ Parable the people who initially refused the king’s wedding invitation, did so not from evil motives but from good and reasonable ones, ‘… but they were not interested, one went off to his farm, another to his business…’. To ignore God’s invitation altogether, is the worst form of refusal. It implies indifference. Indifferent people are the hardest to convert.

God is continually inviting us to the banquet of a fuller, deeper and more spiritual life; a life worthy of our dignity as sons and daughters of God. Let us keep praying, day by day, for the wisdom to continually say ‘Yes’ to God’s invitation.

Entrance Antiphon
Within your will, O Lord, all things are established, and there is none that can resist your will. For you have made all things, the heaven and the earth, and all that is held within the circle of heaven; you are the Lord of all.

1st Reading (Is 5:1-7)
A reading from the prophet Isaiah.
Let me sing to my friend the song of his love for his vineyard. My friend had a vineyard on a fertile hillside. He dug the soil, cleared it of stones and planted choice vines in it. In the middle he built a tower, he dug a press there too. He expected it to yield grapes, but sour grapes were all that it gave. And now, inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, I ask you to judge between my vineyard and me. What could I have done for my vineyard that I have not done? I expected it to yield grapes. Why did it yield sour grapes instead? Very well, I will tell you what I am going to do to my vineyard: I will take away its hedge for it to be grazed on, and knock down its wall for it to be trampled on. I will lay it waste, unpruned, undug; overgrown by the briar and the thorn. I will command the clouds to rain no rain on it. Yes, the vineyard of the Lord of Hosts is the House of Israel, and the men of Judah that chosen plant. He expected justice, but found bloodshed, integrity, but only a cry of distress.’
The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm
The vineyard of the Lord is the House of Israel.

2nd Reading (Phil 4:6-9)
A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Philippians.
There is no need to worry; but if there is anything you need, pray for it, asking God for it with prayer and thanksgiving, and that peace of God, which is so much greater than we can understand, will guard your hearts and your thoughts, in Christ Jesus.  Finally, brothers, fill your minds with everything that is true, everything that is noble, everything that is good and pure, everything that we love and honour, and everything that can be thought virtuous or worthy of praise. Keep doing all the things that you learnt from me and have been taught by me and have heard or seen that I do. Then the God of peace will be with you.
The Word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia! I call you friends, says the Lord, because I have made known to you everything I have learnt from my Father. Alleluia!

Gospel (Mt 21:33-43)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.
Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people, ‘Listen to another parable. There was a man, a landowner, who planted a vineyard; he fenced it round, dug a winepress in it and built a tower; then he leased it to tenants and went abroad. When vintage time drew near he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his produce. But the tenants seized his servants, thrashed one, killed another and stoned a third. Next he sent some more servants, this time a larger number, and they dealt with them in the same way. Finally he sent his son to them. “They will respect my son” he said. But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, “This is the heir. Come on, let us kill him and take over his inheritance.” So they seized him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?’ They answered, ‘He will bring those wretches to a wretched end and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will deliver the produce to him when the season arrives.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Have you never read in the scriptures: It was the stone rejected by the builders that became the keystone. This was the Lord’s doing and it is wonderful to see? ‘I tell you, then, that the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.’
The Gospel of the Lord.

Communion Antiphon
The Lord is good to those who hope in him, to the soul that seeks him.

27TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A
(Reflection by Fr. Vincent John CMI)

Divine love can admit no rival. The love of God is anchored in his character which is love. God’s hands may at times turn against his people, but never his heart, like the master of the vineyard in the Gospel parable. God gave the people of Israel his love and friendship and a beautiful vineyard to tend (Mt 21:33), but like tenants of the parable, they rejected God’s friendship and betrayed his love. It hurt God so deeply that he asked: “What more could I do for my people than I have done?”(Is 5: 4). But God’s love is long and enduring, hence he sent his own Son hoping that they would respect and honour him. Nonetheless, they abused him and killed him. But God’s love was still unflagging. He chose to outdo the hatred of his people by a generous outpouring of his Holy Spirit on them. This means no matter how far we wander away from God, he gently seeks us out and brings us back to himself. This compassionate love of God towards us is to be an example of what we should do to one another.

We have many opportunities to show compassion to others. When we are hurt by someone, it can either cause bitterness and hatred or become an occasion for generous forgiving. We can be compassionate to an alcoholic in our family, to a spouse whose affection has become cold or to a teenager who rejects our family values. When we are let down by somebody whom we have helped, we feel like complaining, “After all that I did for them”! But such personal wounds can offer us a great chance to show God’s own compassion to the ungrateful. Perhaps we are afraid that compassion is dangerous, for it can change our lives, forcing us to see things through God’s eye, compelling us towards an interior conversion of our hearts. God is waiting for our conversion, from hearts of stone to hearts of flesh.
May God bless you.

But we are not deprived of our baptism, or our confirmation.’ Please use the following link to listen to Archbishop Peter’s message https://youtu.be/rFmLhgcwnn0

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY, OCTOBER 18TH
A third collection is normally taken up for World Mission Sunday, however due to the Coronavirus, there is a possibility that there may only be a few people physically in Churches in October. Catholic Mission continue to help people in Cambodia, Myanmar, India and Ghana. However, this has been made very difficult with the cancellation in Melbourne of the June/July Propagation of the Faith appeal.  If you would like to make a donation to Catholic Mission to help them continue their outreach to people for whom the missionary outreach changes lives, this can be done using a mobile phone. The process is to send the word “GIVE” to the number: 0488 854 436. This prompts an immediate reply which provides a link to a platform to make a donation. More information visit www.catholicmission.org.au.

DEVOTIONAL PRAYER FOR SEPTEMBER

All that you have done to us, O Lord, you have done with true judgment, for we have sinned against you and not obeyed your commandments. But give glory to your name and deal with us according to the bounty of your mercy.

1st Reading (Ezek 18:25-28)
A reading from the prophet Ezekiel.
The word of the Lord was addressed to me as follows: ‘You object, “What the Lord does is unjust.” Listen, you House of Israel: is what I do unjust? Is it not what you do that is unjust? When the upright man renounces his integrity to commit sin and dies because of this, he dies because of the evil that he himself has committed. When the sinner renounces sin to become law-abiding and honest, he deserves to live. He has chosen to renounce all his previous sins; he shall certainly live; he shall not die.’
The Word of the Lord.

2nd Reading (Phil 2:1-11)
A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Philippians.
If our life in Christ means anything to you, if love can persuade at all, or the Spirit that we have in common, or any tenderness and sympathy, then be united in your convictions and united in your love, with a common purpose and a common mind. That is the one thing which would make me completely happy. There must be no competition among you, no conceit; but everybody is to be self-effacing. Always consider the other person to be better than yourself, so that nobody thinks of his own interests first but everybody thinks of other people’s interests instead. In your minds you must be the same as Christ Jesus: His state was divine, yet he did not cling to his equality with God but emptied himself to assume the condition of a slave, and became as men are; and being as all men are, he was humbler yet, even to accepting death, death on a cross. But God raised him high and gave him the name which is above all other names so that all beings in the heavens, on earth and in the underworld, should bend the knee at the name of Jesus and that every tongue should acclaim Jesus Christ as Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
The Word of the Lord.

Gospel (Mt 21:28-32)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.
Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people, ‘What is your opinion? A man had two sons. He went and said to the first, “My boy, you go and work in the vineyard today.” He answered, “I will not go,” but afterwards thought better of it and went. The man then went and said the same thing to the second who answered, “Certainly, sir,” but did not go. Which of the two did the father’s will?’ ‘The first’ they said. Jesus said to them, ‘I tell you solemnly, tax collectors and prostitutes are making their way into the kingdom of God before you. For John came to you, a pattern of true righteousness, but you did not believe him, and yet the tax collectors and prostitutes did. Even after seeing that, you refused to think better of it and believe in him.’
The Gospel of the Lord.

Communion Antiphon
Remember your word to your servant, O Lord, by which you have given me hope. This is my comfort when I am brought low.

THE PARABLE OF THE TWO SONS
(Reflection by Dcn. Charles English)

Our Lord Jesus is in the Temple and the chief priests and elders came along to ask Him questions and Jesus, in order to get a message across to them, began to tell a parable about two sons. The parable at first seems simple, straightforward and quite innocuous. It is far from that. Given the context in which it was spoken and the people to whom it was aimed, it is nothing short of explosive.

A father asked his two sons to go and work in his vineyard. One of the sons said that he would not go, and then thought better of it and went off to work in his father’s vineyard. The other son said to his father ‘Certainly, sir’, but did not go to work in the vineyard. Then Jesus asks the people gathered there in the Temple listening to Him, ‘Which of the two did the father’s will?’ and the people answered ‘the first’. It was the son that the father asked first, that had second thoughts and in the end obeyed his father’s command. This son must have realised just how good his father was and just how selfish and self-centred he was. This son also saw that his father, far from writing him off as he deserved, still loved him very much.

Now the other son who had said to his father that he would go and work in the vineyard and then did not go, really did not love and regard his father as much as he thought he did. This son was selfish, proud and complacent. He was the first-born after all. He was the heir. Everything was guaranteed, so why should he have to work? What were his waster of a brother and the servants there for?

Now here comes the crunch. Listen to Jesus’ words and how He is applying them, remembering that He was addressing the chief priests and elders of the people, who despised tax collectors and sinners. Jesus is really saying to the hierarchy of the Temple that they are like the elder son. The chief priests and elders boast about their obedience to God’s commandments but their love is illusory. They are not pleasing to God. But the people that they despise, tax collectors and sinners, they are like the younger son who have thought twice about their lives and have repented and obey God and His commandments.

We are dealing then, in this parable, not with two individuals but with two sets of people. Christ was not really praising either set. Both sets were imperfect, but he was saying that one of them was better than the other. The ideal son, of course, would be a son who immediately carried out his father’s orders. There are some people who will promise anything. At the initial stage of a project they are loud in their protestations of willingness and loyalty. But when it comes to  the actual doing stage they fade away. Then there are others that initially are reluctant to promise anything. Yet often these are exactly the people who come up trumps, provided that we know how to appeal to them.

The meaning of Jesus’ parable is crystal clear. The Jewish people were the Chosen people of God and said that they would obey God but they didn’t. The tax collectors and sinners were those who said they would not obey God, but then thought better of it and repented and did obey Him.

This parable teaches us that promises can never take the place of performance, and fine words can never be a substitute for fine deeds. We should try and see what Jesus is saying to us through this parable. Part of us says ‘Yes’ to God with our words; and part of us says ‘No’ to God with our deeds.

We must constantly examine our conscience. We must try to turn our promises into fulfilment, to turn our words into deeds. We must see ourselves in need of continual conversion. Everyday we can turn one of yesterday’s ‘no’s’ into one of today’s ‘yeses’.

Dear Lord Jesus, please grant us the grace, strength and commitment that the faith we proclaim with our words may be borne out by our deeds.

WORLD DAY OF MIGRANTS & REFUGEES SUNDAY, 27TH  SEPTEMBER
This Sunday 27th September, the Catholic Church across the world marks the 106th World Day of Migrants and Refugees. In his message for this year's World Day of Migrants and Refugees, Pope Francis encourages us to embrace all those who are experiencing situations of precariousness, abandonment, marginalisation and rejection as a result of COVID-19. This year’s theme for the Holy Father’s Message for 2020 World Day of Migrant and Refugee is: “Forced like Jesus Christ to flee”. This pastoral care of the Church towards Migrants and Refugees focused on the following aspects as named by Pope Francis: welcoming, protecting, promoting, and integrating migrants and refugees to enrich our local communities.

Entrance Antiphon
I am the salvation of the people, says the Lord. Should they cry to me in any distress, I will hear them, and I will be their Lord for ever.

1st Reading (Is 55:6-9)
A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Philippians.
Christ will be glorified in my body, whether by my life or by my death. Life to me, of course, is Christ, but then death would bring me something more; but then again, if living in this body means doing work which is having good results – I do not know what I should choose. I am caught in this dilemma: I want to be gone and be with Christ, which would be very much the better, but for me to stay alive in this body is a more urgent need for your sake. Avoid anything in your everyday lives that would be unworthy of the gospel of Christ.
The Word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia! Open our hearts, O Lord, to listen to the words of your Son. Alleluia!

Gospel (Mt 20:1-16)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner going out at daybreak to hire workers for his vineyard. He made an agreement with the workers for one denarius a day, and sent them to his vineyard. Going out at about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place and said to them, “You go to my vineyard too and I will give you a fair wage.” So they went. At about the sixth hour and again at about the ninth hour, he went out and did the same. Then at about the eleventh hour he went out and found more men standing round, and he said to them, “Why have you been standing here idle all day?” “Because no one has hired us” they answered. He said to them, “You go into my vineyard too.” In the evening, the owner of the vineyard said to his bailiff, “Call the workers and pay them their wages, starting with the last arrivals and ending with the first.” So those who were hired at about the eleventh hour came forward and received one denarius each. When the first came, they expected to get more, but they too received one denarius each. They took it, but grumbled at the landowner. “The men who came last” they said “have done only one hour, and you have treated them the same as us, though we have done a heavy day’s work in all the heat.” He answered one of them and said, “My friend, I am not being unjust to you; did we not agree on one denarius? Take your earnings and go. I choose to pay the last comer as much as I pay you. Have I no right to do what I like with my own? Why be envious because I am generous?” Thus the last will be first, and the first, last.’
The Gospel of the Lord.

Communion Antiphon
You have laid down your precepts to be carefully kept; may my ways be firm in keeping your statutes.

PARISH NEWS

25TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR A 2020
(Reflection by Fr. Vincent John CMI)

Some people think that Jesus’ story is an unfair and unjust one. I have heard this many times. This is a very serious accusation. Injustice is an ugly thing. All of us have some experience of it. Jesus’ story is not about injustice, because no injustice is done in it. If this story is not about injustice then what is it about? It is about generosity. “Are you envious because I am generous?” That is the key phrase in the story. The story is about generosity, but not ordinary generosity. It is about a generosity unlike anything we have ever known. The eleventh-hour workers were not idlers who didn’t want to work. They were people no respectable employer would hire. They were left-overs, the rejects. The idea that any employer would take these people at the eleventh hour, and pay them a full day’s wage, was unthinkable. Yet this is exactly what the owner of the vineyard did. This is the strong point of the parable.

Jesus wasn’t talking about human generosity but about the generosity of God. He was illustrating what the First Reading said, “God’s ways are not our ways, and God’s thoughts are not our thoughts”. God’s generosity utterly transcends human generosity. The parable was aimed at the Pharisees. They were critical of Jesus because he befriended sinners. Jesus gave them his answer in this parable. In it he showed them what God is like: God is generous and full of compassion for the poor and outcast.

God deals with us in ways that are very different from the ways we normally deal with one another. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high is God’s generosity above our generosity. The goodness of God is a great comfort to us. But it is also a great challenge, because we are called to imitate it; to make our ways of dealing with one another more like God’s way of dealing with us. God knows our need. He is generous enough to give us what we need to live a successful life in this world and to save enough for eternal life. That saving part may prompt us to grumble. It is a sign of the worldly attitude that is present in us. Bigger the worldly mind, the more severe the grumbling; while greater the heavenly mind, greater the satisfaction and appreciation. The Lord God is just and fair in all His dealings with His children. No one will ever go unrewarded for his works that are accredited to him. The greater the works, the greater the reward.
May God bless you all.

SOCIAL SERVICES SUNDAY
On 20th September 2020, we mark Social Services Sunday within the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne. On this day we are invited to give thanks and pray for all who stand with and provide support to those who are marginalised and vulnerable within our communities. We recognise with deep gratitude, those working within Catholic Social Services Victoria’s 45 member organisations, the 7,000 staff and 17,000 volunteers, who together, serve more than 200,000 people in need each year. We also give thanks for all in our parishes, who are so often at the forefront of providing practical support and care to those in need within their local communities, and beyond. We call to mind the 2020/21 Social Justice Statement brought out recently by the Australian Catholic bishops, To Live Life to the Full: Mental Health in Australia Today, and so draw your attention to a recent event hosted by CSSV, Counselling and Therapeutic Support in a Time of COVID, which provided an opportunity to become more familiar with mental health services, and how to practically reach out for or point to assistance. Parishioners will find the resources in this article helpful.
