DEVOTIONAL PRAYER FOR AUGUST
CORONAVIRUS PRAYER

Lord Jesus Christ, you travelled through towns and villages curing every disease and illness. At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love.

Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care. Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from working together and neighbours from helping one another. Heal us from our pride, which made us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders.

Lord Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow.

Be with families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair. May they know your peace. Be with doctors, nurses, researchers and all medical professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at risk in the process. May they know your protection and peace. Be with leaders of all nations. Give them the foresight to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they are meant to serve. Give them the wisdom to invest in long-term solutions that will help prepare for or prevent future outbreaks. May they know your peace, as they work together to achieve it on earth.

Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few, Lord Jesus Christ, stay with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of our anxiety, give us your peace. Lord Jesus Christ, heal us.

Gospel (Mt 14 :13-21)
When Jesus received the news of John the Baptist’s death he withdrew by boat to a lonely place where they could be by themselves. But the people heard of this and, leaving the towns, went after him on foot. So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them and healed their sick. When evening came, the disciples went to him and said, ‘This is a lonely place, and the time has slipped by; so send the people away, and they can go to the villages to buy themselves some food.’ Jesus replied, ‘There is no need for them to go: give them something to eat yourselves.’ But they answered, ‘All we have with us is five loaves and two fish.’ ‘Bring them here to me,’ he said. He gave orders that the people were to sit down on the grass; then he took the five loaves and the two fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing. And breaking the loaves he handed them to his disciples who gave them to the crowds. They all ate as much as they wanted, and they collected the scraps remaining, twelve baskets full. Those who ate numbered about five thousand men, to say nothing of women and children.

THE FEEDING OF THE FIVE THOUSAND
(A reflection by Dcn. Charles English)

Today’s very well known miracle of the multiplication of the two fish and five barley loaves and the feeding of the crowd of 5,000, is the only miracle that is recorded in all four gospels. This is because the link between this miracle, to the Eucharist is obvious. We see immediately that the verbs used to describe this miracle that Jesus performed with the bread are repeated at every Mass.

Jesus ‘taking the fives loaves and two fish raised His eyes to Heaven, said the blessing and breaking the loaves He handed them to His disciples who gave them to the crowds. They all ate as much as they wanted …’.

Let us look again at these verbs; ‘raised His eyes, blessed, broke, gave, eat’. At every Mass, the priest at the consecration as he holds the bread in his hands, repeats the words of Jesus at the Last Supper: ‘On the day before He was to suffer, He took bread in His holy and venerable hands, and with His eyes raised to Heaven, giving thanks, He said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his disciples saying: Take this all of you and eat it, for this is My Body…..’. These words of Jesus at the Last Supper, also remind us of the words of Jesus at the feeding of the 5,000. This miracle seems to prefigure the Last Supper and the institution of the Holy Eucharist.

We Catholics are so privileged, so blessed to have the Real Presence of Our Lord Jesus, at every Mass; Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, in the form of bread and wine. We should all stand in awe at this great gift that Jesus gave to us.

Another aspect of this miracle is, in the face of limitations, Jesus intervenes and works the miracle, satisfying the hunger of all the people who follow Him. The gift of the bread is not only sufficient to satisfy the crowd, but it is so superabundant that it becomes necessary to gather what is left over. Jesus feeding the crowd is ‘a sign’ that He is indeed the Messiah, and that He prepares a banquet of joy for all humanity. ‘The Eternal Banquet in Heaven whose host is the Bridegroom, Our Lord Jesus’.  The disciples learn from Jesus. Our Lord gives them the bread and fish to distribute. This gesture contains a real fact that is projected into the future. At our daily Eucharistic celebration, the priest distributes the bread, Holy Communion, to us the crowd. This great miracle took place at the most unlikely moment, at the end of the day; when it was almost time to return home. Jesus asked His disciples and the crowd to trust Him, to ‘sit down’ on the grass as if they were not in any hurry. Those who trusted Our Lord Jesus got much more than they needed.

If we look back over our lives, we will see moments when we experienced God’s abundant generosity.

During this time of the pandemic, when there is so much uncertainty and stress, we ask Our Blessed Lord to help us  ‘sit down’ and wait on His goodness, in this moment of crisis. We need to trust in Jesus and remember His words and His promises. ‘Feed my lambs, feed my sheep’.

The Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream and said, ‘Ask what you would like me to give you.’ Solomon replied, ‘O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in succession to David my father. But I am a very young man, unskilled in leadership. Your servant finds himself in the midst of this people of yours that you have chosen, a people so many its numbers cannot be counted or reckoned. We know that by turning everything to their good, God co-operates with all those who love him, with all those he has called according to his purpose. Jesus said to the crowds, ‘The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field which someone has found; he hides it again, goes off happy, sells everything he owns and buys the field. ‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls; when he finds one of great value he goes and sells everything he owns and buys it. ‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet cast into the sea that brings in a haul of all kinds. When it is full, the fishermen haul it ashore; then, sitting down, they collect the good ones in a basket and throw away those that are no use. 17^TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A
(A reflection by Fr. Vincent John CMI)

In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks of sacrifices made to gain the best treasure. Jesus Christ compared the Kingdom of God to a rare pearl or a priceless treasure. In other words, the Kingdom of God is worth everything we have. Those who find it are truly fortunate. One thing the treasure seeker and the pearl merchant had in common was their total sacrifice and commitment to a dream. They were willing to sacrifice everything for a goal they had set for themselves.

The first reading from the first book of Kings, says that King Solomon preferred to do good for his subjects. He asked for an understanding heart, to judge God’s people and to distinguish right from wrong, not for personal wealth, long life, or victories over his enemies. He sacrificed everything to rule his subjects. God was pleased with his choice and gave him everything he requested.

All Christians are called on, to imitate these wise men in order to gain eternal life. It doesn’t mean abandoning the earthly possessions, but makes it a means to gain the Kingdom of God. Heaven is within the reach of all who follow the ordinary vocations of life and partake in this world’s joys and pleasures within the framework of God’s commandments.

The important thing is to never lose sight of the goal toward which we are moving. The treasure was in the field, the pearl was in the market. They made it their own, using their resources and wisdom with true discernment. The Kingdom of God is something that we make a part of our lives. The man who found the treasure was lucky, but the treasure wasn’t legally and fully his until he sacrificed his possessions in order to buy the field. The man who wanted the pearl had to do the same. The Kingdom of heaven doesn’t come automatically. We need to discern between the hidden value of eternal life, while our sacrifice and commitment pave the path to reach this goal. We need to recognise the value of the Kingdom of God over earthly possessions and pleasures. Our choice in this life will be the norm of sorting out at the last moment of eternal life and death. Our faith, commitment and sacrifice for the sake of the Kingdom of God, accompany our eternal life. Let us long for and live for eternal life.

DEVOTIONAL PRAYER FOR JULY
CORONAVIRUS PRAYER

Lord Jesus Christ, you travelled through towns and villages curing every disease and illness. At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love.

Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care. Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from working together and neighbours from helping one another. Heal us from our pride, which made us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders.

Lord Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow.

Be with families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair. May they know your peace. Be with doctors, nurses, researchers and all medical professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at risk in the process. May they know your protection and peace. Be with leaders of all nations. Give them the foresight to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they are meant to serve. Give them the wisdom to invest in long-term solutions that will help prepare for or prevent future outbreaks. May they know your peace, as they work together to achieve it on earth.

Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few, Lord Jesus Christ, stay with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of our anxiety, give us your peace. Lord Jesus Christ, heal us.

Jesus put a parable before the crowds: ‘The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. The owner’s servants went to him and said, “Sir, was it not good seed that you sowed in your field? If so, where does the darnel come from?” “Some enemy has done this” he answered. And the servants said, “Do you want us to go and weed it out?” But he said, “No, because when you weed out the darnel you might pull up the wheat with it. THE PARABLE OF THE WHEAT AND THE WEEDS
(A reflection by Dcn. Charles English)

As followers of Our Lord Jesus, what do we do with the problem of evil? Today’s Gospel about the wheat and the weeds, suggests to us that we should deal with evil, as God deals with evil. That is, with patience and
forbearance but always trying to speak the truth when the opportunity arises.

The first character in the parable, the sower, is Jesus, the Son of Man. He is the one who sows and is responsible for the seed defined as ‘good’. The ‘good seed’ are us, who try to follow Our Lord Jesus and His teachings. All good things come from God. All blessings come from the grace of God. The field is the world.

The second character in the parable, the enemy, is the devil and he comes at night to sow darnel, which is a weed. Darnel resembles wheat and it is very difficult to distinguish darnel from wheat, until both have grown. The darnel are those who follow the evil one, the devil.

The third characters in the parable are the servants, they represent us too, the people of God, people who do their best to try to serve God. The servant’s desire in the cause of good, to remove the weeds, moves them to propose a hasty and reckless plan. In trying to tear out the darnel the wheat could be damaged. The servants listen to their Master’s instructions to leave the weeds until harvest time, when the weeds will be gathered and bound in bundles to be burned.

The owner of the field, the Master, remains calm and in control, he is not surprised that his enemy came at night and sowed weeds amongst the wheat. In the world, there is both good and evil and they are not separated. They are destined to grow together until the end of time.

It is very clear that Jesus takes seriously the consequences of sin, in speaking of fire and a blazing furnace: ‘Just as the darnel is gathered up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of time. The Son of Man will send His angels and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that provoke offences and all who do evil, and throw them into the blazing furnace’.

Hell is a very real thing. Our Lord Jesus talks about hell many, many times in the Gospels. It is not to be dismissed lightly or thought to be non-existent, which would be a terrible mistake. We find this teaching in the Catechism of the Catholic Church: ‘To die in mortal sin, without repenting and accepting God’s merciful love means remaining separated from God forever, by our own free will choice. This state of definitive self-exclusion from communion with God and the blessed, is called Hell”. Good and bad, like the wheat and the weeds, in today’s Gospel passage, will always coexist until the end of time. Good and evil will always be found together among persons and in institutions. We Catholics await the blessed hope, when God’s angels will separate weeds from wheat at the second coming of Our Lord Jesus Christ, at the end of time.

Meanwhile, we pray for the gift of discernment, the proper use of our free will so that we may one day gather again in the safety of God’s barn, and be counted among ‘the virtuous ones who will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Listen, anyone who has ears!’

2^nd Reading (Rom 8:18-23)
I think that what we suffer in this life can never be compared to the glory, as yet unrevealed, which is waiting for us. The whole creation is eagerly waiting for God to reveal his sons. It was not for any fault on the part of creation that it was made unable to attain its purpose, it was made so by God; but creation still retains the hope of being freed, like us, from its slavery to decadence, to enjoy the same freedom and glory as the children of God. From the beginning till now the entire creation, as we know, has been groaning in one great act of giving birth; and not only creation, but all of us who possess the first-fruits of the Spirit, we too groan inwardly as we wait for our bodies to be set free.

He said, ‘Imagine a sower going out to sow. As he sowed, some seeds fell on the edge of the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Others fell on patches of rock where they found little soil and sprang up straight away, because there was no depth of earth; but as soon as the sun came up they were scorched and, not having any roots, they withered away. Others fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Others fell on rich soil and produced their crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Listen, anyone who has ears!’ Then the disciples went up to him and asked, ‘Why do you talk to them in parables?’ ‘Because’ he replied, ‘the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven are revealed to you, but they are not revealed to them. The reason I talk to them in parables is that they look without seeing and listen without hearing or understanding. So in their case this prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled: You will listen and listen again, but not understand, see and see again, but not perceive. 15^TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
(A reflection by Fr. Vincent John CMI)

Jesus’ parable of the sower and the seed is a parable revered for centuries and especially loved by the Church because the question the disciples and we ask is, “If God’s Word is a word of life and salvation and power, a word that can heal, rescue and revive, then why is it getting such a mixed response? Why aren’t all people embracing and absorbing the Word of God?”

God speaks his word to us in many ways. Jesus compared the word of God to a seed, a seed which can make our lives fruitful.  However, if a seed is to produce a harvest, it must be planted in good soil. What kind of soil do we offer God’s word? In this parable two things are important. Seed and Soil. Seed is the word of God and soil is our heart. How many words were spoken to us when we were young? How many seeds were dropped into the soil of our minds and hearts during the spring time of our lives? Those words came from our parents and from many others. We heard words of greetings and welcome, words of encouragement and affirmation, words of advice and guidance, words of comfort and consolation.

At the time we may not have appreciated those words, but we needed to hear them. Only God knows how many of those words took root in our lives. But one thing is clear: our lives would be immeasurably poorer without the sowing of all those words. As adults we still need the sowing of the word. Pity those people who hear nothing but words of criticism and blame. But happy those who hear words of encouragement, love and peace.

But human words, no matter how necessary, will never fully nourish us. We need the word of God. The word of God gives us guidance in times of doubt, reassurance in times of difficulty, comfort in times of sorrow, correction in times of foolishness, challenge in times of laziness and sloth, warning in times of danger, hope in times of despair.

God’s word is never a negative word. It is a word spoken in love. Just as food nourishes the body, so the word of God nourishes the mind, the heart and the spirit. Seeds of God’s kingdom have been abundantly sown everywhere in the world. Despite all violence and despair that threaten us, we can live in hope. God’s kingdom has already come, will continue to grow and will ultimately triumph. The parables of Jesus will enlighten us if we approach them with an open mind and heart, ready to let them challenge us. God’s word can only take root in a receptive heart that is ready to believe and willing to submit with trust and obedience.

DEVOTIONAL PRAYER FOR JULY
CORONAVIRUS PRAYER

Lord Jesus Christ, you travelled through towns and villages curing every disease and illness. At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love.

Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care. Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from working together and neighbours from helping one another. Heal us from our pride, which made us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders.

Lord Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow.

Be with families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair. May they know your peace. Be with doctors, nurses, researchers and all medical professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at risk in the process. May they know your protection and peace. Be with leaders of all nations. Give them the foresight to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they are meant to serve. Give them the wisdom to invest in long-term solutions that will help prepare for or prevent future outbreaks. May they know your peace, as they work together to achieve it on earth.

Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few, Lord Jesus Christ, stay with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of our anxiety, give us your peace. Lord Jesus Christ, heal us.

‘YES, MY YOKE IS EASY AND MY BURDEN LIGHT’

Today’s Gospel, from St. Matthew features one of the most remarkable scenes in the entire Gospel. The disciples are given access to a moment of great intimacy between Jesus the Son, and God the Father. We ‘overhear’ a joyful and spontaneous exclamation that Jesus makes directly to the Father, rejoicing that He has communicated to mere children, that’s His disciples, some sense of the knowledge of God the Father

This privileged knowledge of God the Father, is not something that can be gained by reading, learning or studying; that is why the ‘learned and the clever’ have no claim upon this knowledge by their own efforts. They do not have a monopoly on such knowledge of God.

Knowledge of God is something that is revealed to us and is revealed to us through God’s grace. God reveals knowledge of Himself to those who are most capable of receiving it, mere children, and that’s us. We Catholics are believers in God, believers in the Holy Trinity; Father, Son and Holy Spirit and all this wonderful knowledge has been revealed to the Holy Catholic Church which is the Church founded on Earth by Jesus Christ. It is the Holy Catholic Church and only the Holy Catholic Church that contains the complete deposit of faith. The point about little children is that being so unlearned and meek, they have no hidden agenda and are open to belief. In this passage, Jesus is not condemning intellectual power, what He is condemning is intellectual pride!

Faith is a supernatural gift from God.
Our Lord, Jesus, comes back again and again to this image of the child, to communicate to us a sense of what our human relationship with God should be. ‘Come to Me all you who labour and are overburdened and I will give you rest’. For the Jewish people religion was so often a thing of many burdens. It was a religion of endless rules. A man lived in a forest of regulations and must listen always to a voice which said, ‘Thou shalt not……’ These demands were a real burden.

In the Gospel passage today, we see that Jesus invites us to take His yoke upon our shoulders. The Jews used the phrase, ‘the yoke for entering into submission to’. They spoke of the yoke of the commandments, the yoke of the kingdom, the yoke of the law. Jesus teaches His disciples, that’s us, something entirely different. Jesus says; ‘My yoke is easy and My burden is light’.

As a carpenter, Jesus must have cut many yokes for the farmers, so that they could get two oxen to pull a plough. The yoke was a wooden cross-beam that joined the two animals at the neck, and that cross-beam dragged the farm implement. In today’s Gospel, Jesus is telling us that the yoke He cuts for us does not cause discomfort, but brings to us comfort and consolation, for His yoke is easy and light. Jesus’ yoke is not just an exterior observance, as the Old Testament law was. Jesus teaches us that an interior spirit, a personal relationship with God is most important. The burden of partaking in Jesus’ mission here on Earth is light; and His yoke becomes easy by us joining ourselves with Him. Christ now bears the same yoke beside us, and He moderates His pace and power to our own strength.

Christ walks side by side with us as we shoulder our yoke and our burden.
All we need to do is to trust in Jesus, and His promises to us, for we are the privileged ‘mere children’, the believing and trusting disciples of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus the Christ.

This coming week, let us try and remember that it is only in Our Lord Jesus, that we truly find rest.

Following updated Guidelines, our Parish will operate as follows:

• Church will be open with a LIMIT OF 20 PEOPLE permitted to attend Masses (as per information on first page).
• For weekday Masses from Monday to Friday, parishioners will be admitted into the church on a first come first serve basis up to a limit of 20 people.
• Bookings for weekend Masses (Saturday 9am & 6pm, Sunday 8.30am, 10.30am & 5pm) are to be done online via Trybooking.com using the following link
  https://www.trybooking.com/BKJBB (link will change every week).
• Bookings for weekend Masses close at 2:00pm on Thursday prior to the weekend.
• Please ensure when you book online via Trybooking that you receive a confirmation email. If you have not received your confirmation email, your booking is invalid.
• When you attend the mass that you have booked in, you need not bring a printout of your ticket.
• Due to the increased numbers allowed, parishioners may attend multiple masses during the week. We request you to be considerate and try and come once every couple of days so everyone has an equal opportunity of attending the weekday Masses.
• With the increased demand for weekend masses, parishioners are requested to book a weekend mass once every two weekends. Please note that though the church is opened for masses, the dispensation for Sunday obligation still stands until further notice.

• If you are unwell on your allocated day, PLEASE DO NOT ATTEND FOR THE SAFETY OF OTHERS.
• Due to limited spaces, no children under 5 years old.
• 5m distance from other people must be observed at all times.
• We request everyone to remain in their allocated seats during the duration of their stay in Church
• Church will open 30 minutes before Mass.
• Doors will be shut 5 minutes prior to start of Mass.
• Parishioners must leave church immediately after Mass.
• No collections will be taken, however baskets have been provided at the entrance for anyone wishing to place their donations/thanksgiving envelopes/prayer requests.

Entrance Antiphon
These are the ones who, living in the flesh, planted the Church with their blood; they drank the chalice of the Lord and became the friends of God.

1^st Reading (Acts 12:1-11)
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles
King Herod started persecuting certain members of the Church. He beheaded James the brother of John, and when he saw that this pleased the Jews he decided to arrest Peter as well. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread, and he put Peter in prison, assigning four squads of four soldiers each to guard him in turns. Herod meant to try Peter in public after the end of Passover week. All the time Peter was under guard the Church prayed to God for him unremittingly. On the night before Herod was to try him, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with double chains, while guards kept watch at the main entrance to the prison. Then suddenly the angel of the Lord stood there, and the cell was filled with light. He tapped Peter on the side and woke him. ‘Get up!’ he said ‘Hurry!’ – and the chains fell from his hands. The angel then said, ‘Put on your belt and sandals.’ After he had done this, the angel next said, ‘Wrap your cloak round you and follow me.’ Peter followed him, but had no idea that what the angel did was all happening in reality; he thought he was seeing a vision. They passed through two guard posts one after the other, and reached the iron gate leading to the city. This opened of its own accord; they went through it and had walked the whole length of one street when suddenly the angel left him. It was only then that Peter came to himself. ‘Now I know it is all true’ he said. ‘The Lord really did send his angel and has saved me from Herod and from all that the Jewish people were so certain would happen to me.’

STS. PETER & PAUL, APOSTLES, 2020
(A reflection by Fr. Vincent John CMI)

This Sunday, our Church celebrates the feast of two great saints, the two important pillars of the church, Saints Peter and Paul. They are the two apostles, who showed unity and diversity of opinions, attitudes and missionary zeal in the early church. Jesus called Peter at the beginning of His public ministry, while He called Paul after His resurrection. Jesus called Peter when he was an obedient listening fisherman, while He called Paul who was the strongest persecutor of early believing communities. Once they received the call from Jesus, both of them kept their zeal for Christ always at its peak. There was a difference of opinions between them regarding the nature of their evangelizing mission, though they were preaching the same Jesus and the same Gospel. But they led the Church united in Christ.

St. Peter represents the faith of the church and through St. Peter, Christ has revealed how essential faith is for the Church to survive and flourish. Jesus was with St. Peter for three years. Very early in Jesus’ public life, He could have made St. Peter the head of the Church but He did not. Why? Jesus knew that St. Peter was weak, so weak that at one time he was overthrown by the words of a single maidservant. Therefore Jesus waited for the weak man to grow stronger and stronger and for his faith in him to become unassailable. When Jesus asked, who do you say that I am? And Peter answered, “You are the Son of the living God” (Mt 16/16). Jesus knew that St. Peter’s faith had grown rock-like and gave him the keys of the kingdom. St. Peter's faith grew even stronger when the Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles. His faith in Christ later became a beacon light to all other followers.

St. Paul represents the mission of the Church and through him Christ has revealed how important it is for the Church to continue her mission. What is it that gave St. Paul the strength and courage to shed his blood in the service of the Good News? Paul's encounter with the resurrected Jesus changed his life, the church and the world. He lived for Christ and with Christ; in giving of himself, he was no longer seeking and building himself up. Paul is a figure who cannot be overlooked by anyone who wants to understand Jesus Christ and Christianity.

As we look at the personalities of Sts. Peter and Paul, we see that God called them to use their personalities to spread the Gospel. Peter, to use his strong love to look after the flock, and Paul to use his training as a Pharisee and his strength of character to ensure, that the non-Jews would be welcomed into the church. It is a reminder to us that our talents and our weakness too, can become God's means of helping others, if we allow it. We don't have to be perfect for God to work through us, God can work through us, as he did with Sts. Peter and Paul.

Prayer to St. Peter the Apostle

O Holy Apostle, because you are the Rock upon which Almighty God has built his church; obtain for me I pray you, lively faith, firm hope and burning love; complete detachment from myself, contempt of the world, patience in adversity, humility in prosperity, recollection in prayer, purity of heart, a right intention in all my works, diligence in fulfilling the duties of my state of life, constancy in my resolutions, resignation to the will of God and perseverance in the grace of God even unto death; that so, by means of your intercession and your glorious merits, I may be made worthy to appear before the chief and eternal Shepherd of souls, Jesus Christ, Who with the Father and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns for ever. 2^nd Reading (Rom 5:12-15)
A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Romans.
Sin entered the world through one man, and through sin death, and thus death has spread through the whole human race because everyone has sinned. Sin existed in the world long before the Law was given. There was no law and so no one could be accused of the sin of ‘law-breaking’, yet death reigned over all from Adam to Moses, even though their sin, unlike that of Adam, was not a matter of breaking a law. Adam prefigured the One to come, but the gift itself considerably outweighed the fall. If it is certain that through one man’s fall so many died, it is even more certain that divine grace, coming through the one man, Jesus Christ, came to so many as an abundant free gift.

12^TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – ‘Open and Fearless Speech'
(A reflection by Dcn. Charles English)
When I read this Sunday’s Scripture passage from St. Matthew’s Gospel, as I prepared this reflection, I was immediately struck by how many times Our Lord Jesus says: ‘Do not be afraid’. In this short Scripture passage of only eight verses, Jesus says ‘Do not be afraid’ three times.

So why would Our Lord Jesus be pressing this point home so strongly to His disciples, about not being afraid? Well, in the verse preceding today’s Gospel, Jesus mentions that He has been called Beelzebul by some of the Jewish leaders who were opposed to Jesus and His teachings and were Jesus’s enemies. It was a most terrible insult to call Our Lord Jesus this awful demonic name, as Beelzebul is a name given to the prince of demons.

So Jesus is warning His disciples, and us Catholics too, that if He, the Master, is called terrible names then we who are Jesus’s followers will be called bad names too and we will be vilified and persecuted. Jesus is preparing His disciples, that’s us too, for the time when just because we are Catholics and follow Jesus and His teachings, then that will be enough for others, the enemies of the Catholic Church, to persecute us. And haven’t we all seen this in recent times, the mistreatment and persecution of our Church leaders.

Jesus goes on to tell His disciples not to fear men. And in the strongest terms He makes the point that the only one worth being afraid of is God: ‘Fear Him rather who can destroy both body and soul in Hell’.

In the Bible, we often hear the term ‘Fear of the Lord’. This word ‘fear’ in this context really means that we should have reverence before the wonder of God’s sacred presence, and a profound desire to do God’s will on Earth. God is our Loving Father, just like the Loving Father in the Parable of the Prodigal Son. There is a lovely, even sentimental line in today’s Gospel, that shows us the love and care of God the Father: ‘Why, every hair on your head has been counted’. There is something so wonderful and personal about this line. God the Father knows us in a personal way, and loves us and sent His only Son, Jesus, down to Earth to die on the cross for us all so that the ‘Gates of Heaven’ would be opened to us. That is what a Loving Father our God is.

As we come to the last few lines of today’s Gospel reading, we see very, very strong speech from Our Lord Jesus. This serves also as a strong warning to us all, who call ourselves followers of Christ, disciples of Our Lord Jesus. Our Blessed Lord lays down quite clearly that He expects complete loyalty from us, His disciples. If we are loyal to Jesus and His teachings in this life, Our Lord Jesus will be loyal to us in the life to come. If we are happy and proud to confess and acknowledge that Jesus is our Lord and our God; then, Jesus will be happy to acknowledge us as His servants and loyal followers. It is a plain fact of history, that if there had not been brave men and women in the Early Church, who faced agony and death, and refused to deny their Master, Our Lord Jesus, then there would be no Christianity today, no Catholic Church.

The Church of today, is built on the unbreakable loyalty of those who held fast to their faith.

‘The blood of the Martyrs is the seed of the Church’.

Thanksgiving envelopes and letters for the new financial year will be available for collection from the Church from this weekend 20/21 June 2020. These will be available even when you attend the weekday masses. Please start to use the new envelopes from the weekend of 4/5 July 2020.

UPDATED GUIDELINES
Following updated Guidelines, our Parish will operate as follows:

• Church will be open with a LIMIT OF 50 PEOPLE permitted to attend each service from Monday 22 June. Usual weekday and weekend Masses will be held.
• For weekday Masses from Monday to Friday parishioners will be admitted into the church on a first come first serve basis up to a limit of 50 people.
• Bookings for weekend Masses
  Saturday 9:00am & 6:00pm
  Sunday 8.30am, 10.30am & 5:00pm
  are to be done online via Trybooking.com using the following link
  https://www.trybooking.com/BKCMX (link will change every week).
• Bookings for weekend Masses close at 2:00pm on Thursday prior to the weekend.
• Please ensure when you book online via Trybooking that you receive a confirmation email. If you have not received your confirmation email, your booking is invalid.
• When you come to the mass that you have booked in, you need not bring a printout of your ticket.
• Please note that due to the increased numbers allowed, parishioners may attend multiple masses during the week. However, given the increased demand for weekend masses, parishioners are requested to book a weekend mass once every two weekends. Please note that though the church is opened for masses, the dispensation for Sunday obligation still stands until further notice.

 Please observe the following:

• If you are unwell on your allocated day, PLEASE DO NOT ATTEND FOR THE SAFETY OF OTHERS.
• No children under 5 years old.
• 1.5m distance from other people must be observed at all times.
• We request everyone to remain in their allocated seats during the duration of their stay in Church.
• Church will be open 30 minutes prior to start of Mass.
• Doors will be shut 5 minutes prior to start of Mass.
• Parishioners must leave church immediately after Mass.
• No collections will be taken, however baskets have been provided at the entrance for anyone wishing to place their donations/thanksgiving envelopes/prayer requests.
• Holy Water Bottles can be collected, (1 per family) after Mass.
• Communion will only be under the one species and in the hand only.
• Bulletins will be available but must be taken home, not left in church.
• Hand sanitiser will be provided at the entry doors. All necessary cleaning precautions are being undertaken.

DEVOTIONAL PRAYER FOR JUNE
CORONAVIRUS PRAYER

Lord Jesus Christ, you travelled through towns and villages curing every disease and illness. At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love.

Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care. Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from working together and neighbours from helping one another. Heal us from our pride, which made us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders.

Lord Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow.

Be with families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair. May they know your peace. Be with doctors, nurses, researchers and all medical professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at risk in the process. May they know your protection and peace. Be with leaders of all nations. Give them the foresight to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they are meant to serve. Give them the wisdom to invest in long-term solutions that will help prepare for or prevent future outbreaks. May they know your peace, as they work together to achieve it on earth.

Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few, Lord Jesus Christ, stay with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of our anxiety, give us your peace. Lord Jesus Christ, heal us.

THE MOST HOLY BODY & BLOOD OF CHRIST
(A reflection by Fr. Vincent John CMI)

What is the bread of life which Jesus offers to all who believe in him? It is first of all, the life of God himself – life which sustains us not only now in this age, but also in the age to come. The Rabbis said that the generation in the wilderness had no part in the life to come. God sustained the Israelites in the wilderness with manna from heaven. This bread foreshadowed the true heavenly bread which Jesus would offer his followers.

Jesus is the "bread of life"
The manna in the wilderness sustained the Israelites on their journey to the Promised Land. It could not produce eternal life for the Israelites. The bread which Jesus offers his disciples sustains us not only on our journey to the heavenly paradise, it gives us the abundant supernatural life of God which sustains us for all eternity.

The food that makes us live forever
Jesus chose the time of the Jewish Feast of the Passover to fulfil what he had announced at Capernaum – giving his disciples his body and his blood as the true bread of heaven. Jesus' passing over to his Father by his death and resurrection – the new Passover – is anticipated in the Last Supper, and celebrated in the Eucharist or Lord's Supper, which fulfils the Jewish Passover and anticipates the final Passover of the church in the glory of God's kingdom. When Jesus commands his disciples to eat his flesh and drink his blood, he invites us to take his life into the very centre of our being. That life which he offers is the very life of God himself.

Do you hunger for the "bread of life"?
Jesus offers us the abundant supernatural life of heaven itself – but we can miss it or even refuse it. To refuse Jesus is to refuse eternal life, unending life with the Heavenly Father. To accept Jesus as the bread of heaven, is not only life and spiritual nourishment for this world, but glory in the world to come.

When we receive from the Lord's Table, we unite ourselves to Jesus Christ, who makes us sharers in his body and blood and partakers of his divine life. This supernatural food is healing for both body and soul and strength for our journey heavenward.

The principal fruit of receiving the Eucharist or Lord's Supper, is an intimate union with Christ. As bodily nourishment restores lost strength, so the Eucharist strengthens us in charity, and enables us to break with disordered attachments to creatures. It allows us to be more firmly rooted in the love of Christ.

Congratulations to St Peter's Charismatic Prayer Community (KNK) on completing 25 years in our Parish. A big thank you to all the leadership teams both present and past for their contribution to spiritual renewal and guidance in the parish through the prayer group. ST PETER'S CHARISMATIC PRAYER COMMUNITY (KNK)
Praise the Lord we are 25 years old! Founded on 11 June 1995, Katawan Ni Kristo (Body of Christ) Prayer Community as it was formerly known was originally established for the Filipino Catholic community. Since then it has grown to a spirit filled, multicultural Charismatic prayer group. Throughout the years, our prayer community is led and operated by dedicated volunteers. Guided and inspired by the Holy Spirit, our mission is to bring people to a closer and deeper relationship with God. We seek to achieve this through our weekly prayer meetings. We are also involved in many of our Parish programs and activities such as Healing Masses, Lenten pilgrimage to Ta’ Pinu, Divine Mercy Sunday, Feast of Pentecost, Feast of Corpus Christi and 9 day Novena Dawn Masses. We thank and praise our God for all these wonderful years of Ministry.

POPE FRANCIS – FAITH VIA MEDIA CONSUMPTION IS “NOT THE CHURCH”
Pope Francis said the forced isolation devised to stop the pandemic was presenting the danger of people living the faith only for themselves – detached from the sacraments, the Church and the people of God. Online Masses and spiritual communion do not represent the Church, he said in his homily on 17 April. “This is the Church in a difficult situation that the Lord is allowing, but the ideal of the Church is always with the people and with the sacraments – always,” The pope reflected on serious concerns about the faithful not being able to come together as a community to celebrate Mass or to receive the sacraments because of government restrictions against people gathering in groups as part of efforts to stem the spread of the coronavirus. One’s relationship with Jesus “is intimate, it is personal, but it is in a community," and this closeness to Christ without community, without the Eucharist, without the people of God assembled together and “without the sacraments is dangerous,” he said because people could start living their relationship with God “for just myself, detached from the people of God.” As the Gospels show, Jesus’ disciples always lived their relationship with the Lord as a community – they gathered “at the table, a sign of community. It was always with the sacrament, with bread,” the pope said.

DEVOTIONAL PRAYER FOR JUNE

CORONAVIRUS PRAYER

Lord Jesus Christ, you travelled through towns and villages curing every disease and illness. At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love.

Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care. Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from working together and neighbours from helping one another. Heal us from our pride, which made us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders.

Lord Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow.

Be with families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair. May they know your peace. Be with doctors, nurses, researchers and all medical professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at risk in the process. May they know your protection and peace. Be with leaders of all nations. Give them the foresight to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they are meant to serve. Give them the wisdom to invest in long-term solutions that will help prepare for or prevent future outbreaks. May they know your peace, as they work together to achieve it on earth.

Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few, Lord Jesus Christ, stay with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of our anxiety, give us your peace. Lord Jesus Christ, heal us.

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY
(A reflection by Dcn. Charles English)

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, when the Church celebrates the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity. Our firm belief is that God is One, yet three separate Persons:- Father, Son and Holy Spirit, equal in majesty and glory. One in Three and Three in One. This mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is at the heart of our Christian faith.

This belief in the Holy Trinity, separates us from our Jewish ancestors-in-faith and from the Muslim people, who also believe in one God.

The Catholic Catechism expresses it as:
‘The mystery of the Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith and Life. The Holy Trinity is a mystery of unity, being indivisible, meaning that the Trinity cannot be divided; yet at the same time composed of Three Persons, Father, Son and the Holy Spirit’.

So again the Catholic Catechism stipulates:
‘The Trinity is One. We do not confess three gods, but One God in Three Persons, the ‘consubstantial Trinity’. The divine Persons do not share one divinity among themselves, but each of them is God whole and entire’.

When we begin to pray, or enter the church, or begin the Holy Mass, we state that we are acting in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, by blessing ourselves. This is a declaration of our basic faith, not just an opening formula.

As we make that Sign of the Cross, as we touch our forehead, let us think of the Father, who made us in His image because He loves us. He also created the Universe and all that is in it. When we touch our chest, let us think how Jesus, the Son, came down from Heaven, was born in a stable, became man to live amongst us and share Heaven with us, and then He died a most terrible death upon the cross, because of His great love for us. We then say ‘and of the Holy Spirit’. As we touch our left shoulder let us think of  Jesus carrying His cross over His shoulder, think of the pain, suffering and death on that cross. As we move our hand to our right shoulder, let us say ‘Spirit’ thinking of how Jesus rose from the dead, ascended into Heaven and sits at the right-hand of the Father, and then how He sent us His Spirit as promised, to help us on our pilgrim journey on Earth. We can then join our hands together saying ‘Amen’, pointing our hands towards Heaven, asking that our prayer joins us to Jesus, so that we can follow Him and love Him on Earth and then, be happy with Him in the next.

‘Claimed for Christ!’
On that wonderful day when we were Baptised we were ‘claimed for Christ’. Let us always remember that; especially as we dip our fingers into the holy-water font and make the sign of the cross and bless ourselves with the holy water.

Today on this wonderful Feast of the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, let us renew our commitment to make our way through this sin-darkened world by being bright, shining images of God, of the Most Holy Trinity, who is love.

• Church will be open with a LIMIT OF 20 PEOPLE permitted to attend each service. Masses will be as per information on the first page.
• Bookings for Mass are to be done online via Trybooking.com using the following link https://www.trybooking.com/BJVJH (link will change every week).
• Bookings open on Friday, 5th June at 6:00pm for bookings for Masses from Tuesday 9^th June until Monday 15^th June.
• For Masses from Tuesday to Thursday, bookings close at 2:00pm on the day prior to Mass.
• For weekend and Monday Masses, bookings close at 2:00pm on Friday prior to the weekend.
• Please ensure when you book online via Trybooking you will receive a confirmation email. If you have not received your confirmation email, your booking is invalid.
• When you come to the mass that you have booked in, you need not bring a printout of your ticket.
• Please only book weekend Masses once every 2 weekends and only one mass per week. The parish office will monitor bookings to ensure all parishioners get an equal opportunity to attend Masses.

Please observe the following:

• If you are unwell on your allocated day, PLEASE DO NOT ATTEND FOR THE SAFETY OF OTHERS.
• No children under 5 years old.

No one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord’ unless he is under the influence of the Holy Spirit. There is a variety of gifts but always the same Spirit; there are all sorts of service to be done, but always to the same Lord; working in all sorts of different ways in different people, it is the same God who is working in all of them. The particular way in which the Spirit is given to each person is for a good purpose. Just as a human body, though it is made up of many parts, is a single unit because all these parts, though many, make one body, so it is with Christ. In the one Spirit we were all baptised, Jews as well as Greeks, slaves as well as citizens, and one Spirit was given to us all to drink.

PENTECOST SUNDAY
(A reflection by Fr. Vincent John, CMI)

Today, we celebrate Pentecost Sunday. The word ‘Pentecost’ comes from the Greek word “pentecostes” which means “fiftieth.” This feast commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the official inauguration of the Church. It takes its name from the fact that it comes nearly fifty days after Easter. With the Old Testament background, Israelites celebrated Pentecost on the first day after seven Sabbaths following the Passover. It was known as the Feast of Weeks (Lev. 23) and also the Feast of Harvest (Ex. 23:16). Pentecost has been observed in the Church since the days of the Apostles, as they received the Holy Spirit on that day, and started witnessing to Christ without fear. On Pentecost day, before receiving the Holy Spirit, we see the Apostles hiding behind closed doors because of their fear of the Jews. However, once they received the Holy Spirit, they were filled with power, courage, the gift of tongues and they began to make bold proclamations. These are all the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Today’s three readings make reference to the arrival and the works of the Holy Spirit. Our First Reading from Acts 2:1-11 affirms the arrival of the Holy Spirit. The Second Reading from 1Cor 12:3-7, 12- 13 speaks of baptism in the Holy Spirit as it says, “In one Spirit we were all baptized into one body.” In the Gospel, Jesus sends His disciples to proclaim the Word of God. Tongues of fire along with speaking in diverse tongues were the signs of the empowerment of the Church. As Jesus promised, with the power and strength of the Holy Spirit, we will be able to make possible, things that are impossible. This is what happened on the first Pentecost, and it is what is happening even today everywhere the Holy Spirit is at work. We can see conversions of the hearts taking place in unimaginable persons and situations; big spiritual centres and charities are run without any bank deposit; religious TV channels are run without any commercial ads or deposits; in individuals and communities, peace and comforts are found in a miraculous way; new avenues of a bright future are found or opened after spending a few minutes before God. There are many, many such examples of the works of the Holy Spirit in and around us.

From the very day of Pentecost, the Church has celebrated and administered holy Baptism. On several occasions Christ promised this outpouring of the Spirit, (Lk 12:12; Jn 3:5-8; 7:37-39]. Filled with the Holy Spirit the Apostles began to proclaim “the mighty works of God,” and Peter declared this outpouring of the Spirit to be the sign of the messianic age. Those who believed in the Apostolic preaching and were baptized, received the gift of the Holy Spirit in their turn.”

Every year, this celebration of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost is an invitation to us to have the same encounter. It is the Holy Spirit who makes it possible for us to live lives of sacrificial love, holiness and service, in a world that God still loves – a world into which He still sends His Son, through the Body of Christ, the Church – of which we are all members. And like Pentecost, even today, the Spirit is being poured over all receiving lands, individually and collectively. To remain always overflowing in gladness like the early Christian Church, we need to be one in Spirit, as worshiping, loving and sharing individuals and communities.
