DEVOTIONAL PRAYER FOR FEBRUARY
Prayer for Lent

Merciful God, You called us forth from the dust of the earth; you claimed us for Christ in the waters of Baptism. Look upon us as we enter these Forty Days bearing the mark of ashes, and bless our journey through the desert of Lent to the font of rebirth. May our fasting be hunger for justice; our alms, a making of peace; our prayer, the chant of humble and grateful hearts. All that we do and pray is in the name of Jesus, for in his Cross we proclaim your love forever. Amen.

Entrance Antiphon
When he calls on me, I will answer him; I will deliver him and give him glory, I will grant him length of days.

1st Reading (Gen 2:7-9, 3:1-7)
A reading from the book of Genesis.
The Lord God fashioned man of dust from the soil. Then he breathed into his nostrils a breath of life, and thus man became a living being. The Lord God planted a garden in Eden which is in the east, and there he put the man he had fashioned. The Lord God caused to spring up from the soil every kind of tree, enticing to look at and good to eat, with the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the middle of the garden. The serpent was the most subtle of all the wild beasts that the Lord God had made. It asked the woman, ‘Did God really say you were not to eat from any of the trees in the garden?’ The woman answered the serpent, ‘We may eat the fruit of the trees in the garden. But of the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden God said, “You must not eat it, nor touch it, under pain of death”.‘ Then the serpent said to the woman, ‘No! You will not die! God knows in fact that on the day you eat it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil.’ The woman saw that the tree was good to eat and pleasing to the eye, and that it was desirable for the knowledge that it could give. So she took some of its fruit and ate it. She gave some also to her husband who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened and they realised that they were naked. So they sewed fig-leaves together to make themselves loin-cloths.
The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm
Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.

2nd Reading (Rom 5:12; 17-19)
A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Romans.
Sin entered the world through one man, and through sin death, and thus death has spread through the whole human race because everyone has sinned. If it is certain that death reigned over everyone as the consequence of one man’s fall, it is even more certain that one man, Jesus Christ, will cause everyone to reign in life who receives the free gift that he does not deserve, of being made righteous. Again, as one man’s fall brought condemnation on everyone, so the good act of one man brings everyone life and makes them justified. As by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by one man's obedience many will be made righteous.
The Word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, king of endless glory! No one lives on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, king of endless glory!

Gospel (Mt 4:1-11 )
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.
Jesus was led by the Spirit out into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, after which he was very hungry, and the tempter came and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to turn into loaves.’ But he replied, ‘Scripture says: Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ The devil then took him to the holy city and made him stand on the parapet of the Temple. ‘If you are the Son of God’ he said ‘throw yourself down; for scripture says: He will put you in his angels’ charge, and they will support you on their hands in case you hurt your foot against a stone.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Scripture also says: You must not put the Lord your God to the test.’ Next, taking him to a very high mountain, the devil showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour. ‘I will give you all these’ he said, ‘if you fall at my feet and worship me.’ Then Jesus replied, ‘Be off, Satan! For scripture says: You must worship the Lord your God, and serve him alone.’ Then the devil left him, and angels appeared and looked after him.
The Gospel of the Lord.

Communion Antiphon
One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS AND ANTI-DISCRIMINATION LAWS INQUIRY
The Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) current Inquiry into the Framework of Religious Exemptions in Anti-Discrimination Legislation has produced a Consultation Paper which proposes severe limits on the ability for religious schools to appoint staff who support their mission other than roles in which ‘the teaching, observance or practice of the religion is a genuine requirement of the role.’ For every other role it would become unlawful for the school to give preference to teachers who share, or who are willing, to support the religious beliefs of the institution. This would effectively remove the right of faith-based schools to express their religious identity and culture. Archbishop Comensoli, along with other faith leaders, encourages you, as well as parents and other members of the Catholic community, to complete the following survey with an expression of hope to protect faith-based schools from further obstacles that will impede their ability to express our Catholic faith:

DEVOTIONAL PRAYER FOR FEBRUARY
PRAYER FOR EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS IN TURKEY & SYRIA

We pray for the people of Turkey and Syria, whose lives have been devasted by the earthquake. Be present, O Lord, our Good Shepherd, to bring comfort, relief, shelter and human kindness. Shield the people who suffer, console those who are bereaved, prosper the provision of relief, strengthen the work of emergency teams and shine your light and hope in the midst of despair. Amen.

Entrance Antiphon
O Lord, I trust in your merciful love. My heart will rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord who has been bountiful with me.

1st Reading (Lev 19:1-2,17-18 )
A reading from the book of Leviticus.
The Lord spoke to Moses; he said: ‘Speak to the whole community of the sons of Israel and say to them: ‘“Be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy. You must not bear hatred for your brother in your heart. You must openly tell him, your neighbour, of his offence; this way you will not take a sin upon yourself. You must not exact vengeance, nor must you bear a grudge against the children of your people. You must love your neighbour as yourself. I am the Lord.”’
The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm
The Lord is kind and merciful.

2nd Reading (1 Cor 3:16-23)
A reading from the first letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians.
Didn’t you realise that you were God’s temple and that the Spirit of God was living among you? If anybody should destroy the temple of God, God will destroy him, because the temple of God is sacred; and you are that temple. Make no mistake about it: if any one of you thinks of himself as wise, in the ordinary sense of the word, then he must learn to be a fool before he really can be wise. Why? Because the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As scripture says: The Lord knows wise men’s thoughts: he knows how useless they are; or again: God is not convinced by the arguments of the wise. So there is nothing to boast about in anything human: Paul, Apollos, Cephas, the world, life and death, the present and the future, are all your servants; but you belong to Christ and Christ belongs to God.
The Word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia! Whoever keeps the word of Christ, grows perfect in the love of God. Alleluia!

Gospel (Mt 5:38-48)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You have learnt how it was said: Eye for eye and tooth for tooth. But I say this to you: offer the wicked man no resistance. On the contrary, if anyone hits you on the right cheek, offer him the other as well; if a man takes you to law and would have your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone orders you to go one mile, go two miles with him. Give to anyone who asks, and if anyone wants to borrow, do not turn away. ‘You have learnt how it was said: You must love your neighbour and hate your enemy. But I say this to you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you; in this way you will be sons of your Father in heaven, for he causes his sun to rise on bad men as well as good, and his rain to fall on honest and dishonest men alike. For if you save your greetings for your brothers, are you doing anything exceptional? Even the pagans do as much, do they not? You must therefore be perfect just as your heavenly Father is perfect.’
The GOspel of the Lord.

Communion Antiphon
I will recount all your wonders, I will rejoice in you and be glad, and sing psalms to your name, O Most High.

DEVOTIONAL PRAYER FOR FEBRUARY PRAYER FOR EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS IN TURKEY & SYRIA

We pray for the people of Turkey and Syria, whose lives have been devasted by the earthquake. Be present, O Lord, our Good Shepherd, to bring comfort, relief, shelter and human kindness. Shield the people who suffer, console those who are bereaved, prosper the provision of relief, strengthen the work of emergency teams and shine your light and hope in the midst of despair. Amen.

Entrance Antiphon
Be my protector, O God, a mighty stronghold to save me. For you are my rock, my stronghold! Lead me, guide me, for the sake of your name.

1st Reading (Sir 15:15-20)
A reading from the book of Sirach.
If you wish, you can keep the commandments, to behave faithfully is within your power. He has set fire and water before you; put out your hand to whichever you prefer. Man has life and death before him; whichever a man likes better will be given him. For vast is the wisdom of the Lord; he is almighty and all-seeing. His eyes are on those who fear him, he notes every action of man. He never commanded anyone to be godless, he has given no one permission to sin.
The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm
Happy are they who follow the law of the Lord!

2nd Reading (1 Cor 2:6-10)
A reading from the first letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians.
We have a wisdom to offer those who have reached maturity: not a philosophy of our age, it is true, still less of the masters of our age, which are coming to their end. The hidden wisdom of God which we teach in our mysteries is the wisdom that God predestined to be for our glory before the ages began. It is a wisdom that none of the masters of this age have ever known, or they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory; we teach what scripture calls: the things that no eye has seen and no ear has heard, things beyond the mind of man, all that God has prepared for those who love him. These are the very things that God has revealed to us through the Spirit, for the Spirit reaches the depths of everything, even the depths of God.
The Word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia! Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the kingdom. Alleluia!

Gospel (Mt 5:17-37)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.
Jesus said to his disciples, ‘I tell you, if your virtue goes no deeper than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven. ‘You have learnt how it was said to our ancestors: You must not kill; and if anyone does kill he must answer for it before the court. But I say this to you: anyone who is angry with his brother will answer for it before the court. ‘You have learnt how it was said: You must not commit adultery. But I say this to you: if a man looks at a woman lustfully, he has already committed adultery with her in his heart. ‘Again, you have learnt how it was said to our ancestors: You must not break your oath, but must fulfil your oaths to the Lord. But I say this to you: do not swear at all. All you need say is “Yes” if you mean yes, “No” if you mean no; anything more than this comes from the evil one.’
The Gospel of the Lord.

Communion Antiphon
They ate and had their fill, and what they craved the Lord gave them; they were not disappointed in what they craved.

DEVOTIONAL PRAYER FOR FEBRUARY
PRAYER FOR PEACE & JUSTICE IN UKRAINE

God of peace and justice, who change the hardened heart and break the power of violence, we entrust the people of Ukraine to you.
Protect them in this time of peril; let them know not death but life; not slavery but freedom.
You are Father of all; we are brothers and sisters.
Give us the strength to live that truth in love, choosing peace not war. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Entrance Antiphon
O come, let us worship God and bow low before the God who made us, for he is the Lord our God.

1st Reading (Is 58:7-10)
A reading from the prophet Isaiah.
Thus says the Lord: Share your bread with the hungry, and shelter the homeless poor, clothe the man you see to be naked and do not turn from your own kin. Then your light will shine like the dawn and your wound be quickly healed over. Your integrity will go before you and the glory of the Lord behind you. Cry, and the Lord will answer; call, and he will say, ‘I am here.’ If you do away with the yoke, the clenched fist, the wicked word, if you give your bread to the hungry, and relief to the oppressed, your light will rise in the darkness, and your shadows become like noon.
The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm
A light rises in the darkness for the upright.

2nd Reading (1 Cor 2:1-5)
A reading from the first letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians.
When I came to you, brothers, it was not with any show of oratory or philosophy, but simply to tell you what God had guaranteed. During my stay with you, the only knowledge I claimed to have was about Jesus, and only about him as the crucified Christ. Far from relying on any power of my own, I came among you in great ‘fear and trembling’ and in my speeches and the sermons that I gave, there were none of the arguments that belong to philosophy; only a demonstration of the power of the Spirit. And I did this so that your faith should not depend on human philosophy but on the power of God.
The Word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia! I am the light of the world, says the Lord; the man who follows me will have the light of life. Alleluia!

Gospel (Mt 5:13-16)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.
Jesus said to his disciples, ‘You are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes tasteless, what can make it salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled underfoot by men. ‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hilltop cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in the sight of men, so that, seeing your good works, they may give the praise to your Father in heaven.’
The Gospel of the Lord.

Communion Antiphon
Let them thank the Lord for his mercy, his wonders for the children of men, for he satisfies the thirsty soul, and the hungry he fills with good things.

DEVOTIONAL PRAYER FOR JANUARY
PRAYER FOR PEACE & JUSTICE IN UKRAINE

God of peace and justice, who change the hardened heart and break the power of violence, we entrust the people of Ukraine to you.
Protect them in this time of peril; let them know not death but life; not slavery but freedom.
You are Father of all; we are brothers and sisters.
Give us the strength to live that truth in love, choosing peace not war.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Entrance Antiphon
Save us, O Lord our God! And gather us from the nations, to give thanks to your holy name, and make it our glory to praise you.

1st Reading (Zeph 2:3,3:12-13)
A reading from the prophet Zephaniah.
Seek the Lord all you, the humble of the earth, who obey his commands. Seek integrity, seek humility: you may perhaps find shelter on the day of the anger of the Lord. In your midst I will leave a humble and lowly people, and those who are left in Israel will seek refuge in the name of the Lord. They will do no wrong, will tell no lies; and the perjured tongue will no longer be found in their mouths. But they will be able to graze and rest with no one to disturb them.’
The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm
Happy the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is theirs!

2nd Reading (1 Cor 1:26-31)
A reading from the first letter of St. Paul to the Corinth
Take yourselves, brothers, at the time when you were called: how many of you were wise in the ordinary sense of the word, how many were influential people, or came from noble families? No, it was to shame the wise that God chose what is foolish by human reckoning, and to shame what is strong that he chose what is weak by human reckoning; those whom the world thinks common and contemptible are the ones that God has chosen – those who are nothing at all to show up those who are everything. The human race has nothing to boast about to God, but you, God has made members of Christ Jesus and by God’s doing he has become our wisdom, and our virtue, and our holiness, and our freedom. As scripture says: if anyone wants to boast, let him boast about the Lord.
The Word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia! Rejoice and be glad: your reward will be great in heaven. Alleluia!

Gospel (Mt 5:1-12)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.
Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up the hill. There he sat down and was joined by his disciples. Then he began to speak. This is what he taught them: ‘How happy are the poor in spirit; theirs is the kingdom of heaven.Happy the gentle: they shall have the earth for their heritage.Happy those who mourn: they shall be comforted.Happy those who hunger and thirst for what is right: they shall be satisfied.Happy the merciful: they shall have mercy shown them.Happy the pure in heart: they shall see God.Happy the peacemakers: they shall be called sons of God.Happy those who are persecuted in the cause of right: theirs is the kingdom of heaven.‘Happy are you when people abuse you and persecute you and speak all kinds of calumny against you on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.’
The Gospel of the Lord.

Communion Antiphon
Let your face shine on your servant. Save me in your merciful love. O Lord, let me never be put to shame, for I call on you.

DEVOTIONAL PRAYER FOR JANUARY
Australia Day Prayer

We bless you, God of the universe, for this land,
For its contrasts of landscape and climate,
For its abundance of wealth and opportunity.
We bless you for our history, with all its struggle in adversity,
Its courage and hope.
Give us in our diversity tolerance and respect for each other
And a passionate commitment to justice for all.
Bless us so that we might be a blessing to others.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Entrance Antiphon
O sing a new song to the Lord; sing to the Lord, all the earth. In his presence are majesty and splendour, strength and honour in his holy place.

1st Reading (Is 8:23-9:3)
A reading from the prophet Isaiah.
In days past the Lord humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in days to come he will confer glory on the Way of the Sea on the far side of Jordan, province of the nations. The people that walked in darkness has seen a great light; on those who live in a land of deep shadow a light has shone. You have made their gladness greater, you have made their joy increase; they rejoice in your presence as men rejoice at harvest time, as men are happy when they are dividing the spoils. For the yoke that was weighing on him, the bar across his shoulders, the rod of his oppressor, these you break as on the day of Midian. The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm
The Lord is my light and my salvation.

2nd Reading (1 Cor 1:10-13, 17)
A reading from the first letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians.
I appeal to you, brothers, for the sake of our Lord Jesus Chirst, to make up the differences between you, and instead of disagreeing among yourselves, to be united again in your belief and practice. From what Chloe’s people have been telling me, my dear brothers, it is clear that there are serious differences among you. What I mean are all these slogans that you have, like: ‘I am for Paul’, ‘I am for Apollos’, ‘I am for Cephas’, ‘I am for Christ’. Has Christ been parcelled out? Was it Paul that was crucified for you? Were you baptised in the name of Paul? For Christ did not send me to baptise, but to preach the Good News, and not to preach that in the terms of philosophy in which the crucifixion of Christ cannot be expressed.
The Word of the Lord

Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia. Jesus preached the Good News of the kingdom, and healed all who were sick. Alleluia!

Gospel (Mt 4:12-23)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.
Hearing that John had been arrested Jesus went back to Galilee, and leaving Nazareth he went and settled in Capernaum, a lakeside town on the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali. In this way the prophecy of Isaiah was to be fulfilled: Land of Zebulun! Land of Naphtali! Way of the sea on the far side of Jordan, Galilee of the nations! The people that lived in darkness has seen a great light; on those who dwell in the land and shadow of death a light has dawned. From that moment Jesus began his preaching with the message, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.’ As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee he saw two brothers, Simon, who was called Peter, and his brother Andrew; they were making a cast in the lake with their net, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.’ And they left their nets at once and followed him. Going on from there he saw another pair of brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John; they were in their boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. At once, leaving the boat and their father, they followed him. He went round the whole of Galilee teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the Good News of the kingdom and curing all kinds of diseases and sickness among the people.
The Gospel of the Lord.

Communion Antiphon
Look toward the Lord and be radiant; let your faces not be abashed.

Be our Light, our Guide, and our Comforter.
Be our Strength, Courage, and our Sanctifier.
May this New Year be a time of deep spiritual growth for us,

Come Holy Spirit, be with us always.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.  Amen

Entrance Antiphon
All the earth shall bow down before you, O God, and shall sing to you, shall sing to your name, O Most High.

1st Reading (Is 49:3, 5-6)
A reading from the prophet Isaiah.
The Lord said to me, ‘You are my servant, Israel, in whom I shall be glorified’; I was honoured in the eyes of the Lord, my God was my strength. And now the Lord has spoken, he who formed me in the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, to gather Israel to him: ‘It is not enough for you to be my servant, to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back the survivors of Israel; I will make you the light of the nations so that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.’
The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm
Here I am Lord; I come to do your will.

2nd Reading (1 Cor 1:1-3)
A reading from the first letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians.
I, Paul, appointed by God to be an apostle, together with brother Sosthenes, send greetings to the church of God in Corinth, to the holy people of Jesus Christ, who are called to take their place among all the saints everywhere who pray to our Lord Jesus Christ; for he is their Lord no less than ours. May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ send you grace and peace.
The Word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia. The Word of God became flesh and dwelt among us. He enabled those who accepted him to become the children of God. Alleluia!

Gospel (Jn 1:29-34)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to St. John.
Seeing Jesus coming towards him, John said, ‘Look, there is the lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world. This is the one I spoke of when I said: A man is coming after me who ranks before me because he existed before me. I did not know him myself, and yet it was to reveal him to Israel that I came baptising with water.’ John also declared, ‘I saw the Spirit coming down on him from heaven like a dove and resting on him. I did not know him myself, but he who sent me to baptise with water had said to me, “The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and rest is the one who is going to baptise with the Holy Spirit.” Yes, I have seen and I am the witness that he is the Chosen One of God.’
The Gospel of the Lord.

RIP HIS EMINENCE CARDINAL GEORGE PELL
Message from Archbishop Peter Comensoli:
Earlier today, I heard the sad news of the death of Cardinal George Pell, overnight from heart complications following hip surgery in Rome. Cardinal Pell was a very significant and influential Church leader, both in Australia and internationally, deeply committed to Christian discipleship. The seventh Archbishop of Melbourne, he led the local Church of Melbourne from 1996 to 2001 with strong leadership in the Catholic faith and with good governance, before being transferred to Sydney and then to Rome.
At this time, let our prayers go out to the God of Jesus Christ, whom Cardinal Pell wholeheartedly believed in and followed, that he may be welcomed into eternal life. Our prayers of comfort and condolence are also with his family, and we unite with all the people of God in Melbourne in praying for the repose of his soul. May eternal light shine upon him, and may he now rest in peace and rise to glory in the Lord.

Entrance Antiphon
Behold, the Lord, the Mighty One, has come; and kingship is in his grasp, and power and dominion.

1st Reading (Is 60:1-6)
A reading from the prophet Isaiah.
Arise, shine out Jerusalem, for your light has come, the glory of the Lord is rising on you, though night still covers the earth and darkness the peoples.  Above you the Lord now rises and above you his glory appears. The nations come to your light and kings to your dawning brightness. Lift up your eyes and look round: all are assembling and coming towards you, your sons from far away and daughters being tenderly carried. At this sight you will grow radiant, your heart throbbing and full; since the riches of the sea will flow to you; the wealth of the nations come to you; camels in throngs will cover you, and dromedaries of Midian and Ephah; everyone in Sheba will come, bringing gold and incense and singing the praise of the Lord.
The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm
Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.

2nd Reading (Eph 3:2-3, 5-6)
A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Ephesians.
You have probably heard how I have been entrusted by God with the grace he meant for you, and that it was by a revelation that I was given the knowledge of the mystery. This mystery that has now been revealed through the Spirit to his holy apostles and prophets was unknown to any men in past generations; it means that pagans now share the same inheritance, that they are parts of the same body, and that the same promise has been made to them, in Christ Jesus, through the gospel.
The Word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia! We have seen his star in the East; and have come to adore the Lord. Alleluia!

Gospel (Mt 2:1-12)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew
After Jesus had been born at Bethlehem in Judaea during the reign of King Herod, some wise men came to Jerusalem from the east. Where is the infant king of the Jews?’ they asked. ‘We saw his star as it rose and have come to do him homage.’ When King Herod heard this he was perturbed, and so was the whole of Jerusalem. He called together all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, and enquired of them where the Christ was to be born. ‘At Bethlehem in Judaea’, they told him ‘for this is what the prophet wrote: And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, you are by no means least among the leaders of Judah, for out of you will come a leader who will shepherd my people Israel.’ Then Herod summoned the wise men to see him privately. He asked them the exact date on which the star had appeared, and sent them on to Bethlehem. ‘Go and find out all about the child’, he said ‘and when you have found him, let me know, so that I too may go and do him homage.’ Having listened to what the king had to say, they set out. And there in front of them was the star they had seen rising; it went forward and halted over the place where the child was. The sight of the star filled them with delight, and going into the house they saw the child with his mother Mary, and falling to their knees they did him homage. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh. But they were warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, and returned to their own country by a different way.
The Gospel of the Lord.

Communion Antiphon
We have seen his star in the East, and have come with gifts to adore the Lord.

JOURNEYING TOGETHER WITH SR. NATHALIE BECQUART XMCJ, TUESDAY, 31 JANUARY 23
Sr Nathalie Becquart XMCJ is the Undersecretary of the General Secretariat of the Synod and one of the most influential women in the Church today. As part of Sr Nathalie’s tour of Australia, we are delighted to have this opportunity to hold this conversation on ‘journeying together’ as Church both universally and locally. As our local Church in Melbourne walks the path of Take the Way of the Gospel, the universal Church is on her journey of synodality (Synod 2021-2024: For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation and Mission). These journeys are connected and they invite us to walk together, and listen to the Holy Spirit and each other. We hope that this event will be beneficial for parish leadership, Take the Way of the Gospel coordinators and Archdiocesan staff, particularly those leading or who have an interest in Take the Way of the Gospel.

DEVOTIONAL PRAYER FOR JANUARY
Prayer for Feast of Mary, Mother of God

Father, source of light in every age, the virgin conceived and bore your Son who is called Wonderful God, Prince of Peace. May her prayer, the gift of a mother's love, be your people's joy through all ages. May her response, born of a humble heart, draw your Spirit to rest on your people. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Entrance Antiphon
Hail, Holy Mother, who gave birth to the King, who rules heaven and earth for ever.

1st Reading (Num 6:22-27)
A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Galatians.
The Lord spoke to Moses and said, ‘Say this to Aaron and his sons: “This is how you are to bless the sons of Israel. You shall say to them:
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May the Lord let his face shine on you and be gracious to you.
May the Lord uncover his face to you and bring you peace.”
This is how they are to call down my name on the sons of Israel, and I will bless them.’
The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm
May God bless us in his mercy.

2nd Reading (Gal 4:4-7)
A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Galatians.
When the appointed time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born a subject of the Law, to redeem the subjects of the Law and to enable us to be adopted as sons. The proof that you are sons is that God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts: the Spirit that cries, ‘Abba, Father’, and it is this that makes you a son, you are not a slave anymore; and if God has made you son, then he has made you heir.

Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia. In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets; now he speaks to us through his Son. Alleluia!

Gospel (Lk 2:16-21)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke.
The shepherds hurried away to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. When they saw the child they repeated what they had been told about him, and everyone who heard it was astonished at what the shepherds had to say. As for Mary, she treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds went back glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen; it was exactly as they had been told. When the eighth day came and the child was to be circumcised, they gave him the name Jesus, the name the angel had given him before his conception.

Communion Antiphon
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and for ever.

DEVOTIONAL PRAYER FOR DECEMBER
Prayer to the Holy Family

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in you we contemplate the splendour of true love; to you we turn with trust. Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families too may be places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic Churches. Holy Family of Nazareth, make us more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God’s plan. Jesus, Mary and Joseph graciously hear our prayer.   Amen

Entrance Antiphon
A child is born for us, and a son is given to us; his sceptre of power rests upon his shoulder, and his name will be called Messenger of great counsel.

1st Reading (Is 52:7-10 )
A reading from the prophet Isaiah.
How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of one who bring good news, who heralds peace, brings happiness, proclaims salvation, and tells Zion, “Your God is king!” Listen! Your watchmen raise their voices; they shout for joy together for they see the Lord face to face, as he returns to Zion. Break into shouts of joy together, you ruins of Jerusalem, for the Lord is consoling his people, redeeming Jerusalem. The Lord bares his holy arm in the sight of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm
All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God

2nd Reading (Heb 1:1-6)
A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Hebrews.
At various times in the past and in various different ways, God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets, but in our own time, the last days he has spoken to us through his Son, the Son that he has appointed to inherit everything and through whom he made everything there is. He is the radiant light of God’s glory and the perfect copy of his nature, sustaining the universe by his powerful command, and now that he has destroyed the defilement of sin, he has gone to take his place in heaven at the right hand of divine Majesty. So he is now as far above the angels as the title which he has inherited is higher than their own name. God has never said to any angel: You are my Son, today I have become your father, or: I will be a father to him and he a son to me. Again, when he brings the First-born into the world, he says: Let all the angels of God worship him.
The Word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia. A holy day has dawned upon us. Come, you nations and adore the Lord. Today a great light has come upon the earth. Alleluia!

Gospel (Jn 1:1-18)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John.
In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things came to be; not one thing had its being but through him. All that came to be had life in him and that life was the light of men, a light that shines in the dark, a light that darkness could not overpower. The Word was the true light that enlightens all men; and he was coming into the world. He was in the world that had its being through him, and the world did not know him. He came to his own domain and his own people did not accept him. But to all who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to all who believe in the name of him who was born not out of human stock or urge of the flesh or will of man but of God himself. The Word was made flesh, he lived among us and we saw his glory, the glory that is his as the only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.
The Gospel of the Lord.

Communion Antiphon
All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

PARISH NEWS

JESUS, THE REASON FOR CHRISTMAS
Jesus, in remembering your birth this Christmas, let us guide our thoughts towards the reason for this celebration. Let us feel joy in your presence and thank the Father for such a beautiful gift. Let us always bear in mind the reason why you came to the world. Amen

FR. VINCENT & THE PARISH TEAM wish all our parishioners a wonder-filled Christmas and every blessing as we welcome the Christ Child into our hearts and into our homes. May you have the gift of faith, the blessing of hope and the peace of His love at Christmas and in 2023.

A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM ARCHBISHOP COMENSOLI In his Christmas message for 2022, Archbishop Peter A Comensoli reflects on the God who came to dwell with us and for us, touching the earth with the bare soles of his feet. He invites us to ‘stand barefoot with Jesus’, encouraging us this Christmas and in the year ahead to ‘come before him barefoot in our frailties yet alive in the wonder of our humanity—made in his image—ready and willing to live as the people of God he has created us to be—fraternally, lovingly, caringly; generous, forgiving and hopeful.
