DEVOTIONAL PRAYER FOR SEPTEMBER
Prayer for Migrants and Refugees

Lord Jesus, today you call us to welcome the members of God’s family who come to our land to escape oppression, poverty, persecution, violence and war.

Lord Jesus, help us by your grace:

To banish fear from our hearts, that we may embrace each of your children as our own brother and sister;

To welcome migrants and refugees with joy and generosity, while responding to their many needs;

To give witness to your love for all people, as we celebrate the many gifts they bring.

We praise you and give you thanks for the family you have called together from so many people. We make this prayer through Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen

Entrance Antiphon
All that you have done to us, O Lord, you have done with true judgment, for we have sinned against you and not obeyed your commandments. But give glory to your name and deal with us according to the bounty of your mercy.

1^st Reading (Amos 6:1,4-7)
A reading from the prophet Amos.
The almighty Lord says this: Woe to those ensconced so snugly in Zion and those who feel so safe on the mountain of Samaria. Lying on ivory beds and sprawling on their divans, they dine on lambs from the flock, and stall-fattened veal; they bawl to the sound of the harp, they invent new instruments of music like David, they drink wine by the bowlful, and use the finest oil for anointing themselves, but about the ruin of Joseph they do not care at all. That is why they will be the first to be exiled; the sprawlers’ revelry is over.

A reading from the first letter of St Paul to Timothy.
As a man dedicated to God, you must aim to be saintly and religious, filled with faith and love, patient and gentle. Fight the good fight of the faith and win for yourself the eternal life to which you were called when you made your profession and spoke up for the truth in front of many witnesses. Now, before God the source of all life and before Jesus Christ, who spoke up as a witness for the truth in front of Pontius Pilate, I put to you the duty of doing all that you have been told, with no faults or failures, until the Appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who at the due time will be revealed by God, the blessed and only Ruler of all, the King of kings and the Lord of lords, who alone is immortal, whose home is in inaccessible light, whom no man has seen and no man is able to see: to him be honour and everlasting power. Jesus said to the Pharisees, ‘There was a rich man who used to dress in purple and fine linen and feast magnificently every day. And at his gate there lay a poor man called Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to fill himself with the scraps that fell from the rich man’s table. Dogs even came and licked his sores. Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. ‘In his torment in Hades he looked up and saw Abraham a long way off with Lazarus in his bosom. So he cried out, “Father Abraham, pity me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames.” “My son,” Abraham replied “remember that during your life good things came your way, just as bad things came the way of Lazarus. Now he is being comforted here while you are in agony. God of peace and justice, who change the hardened heart and break the power of violence, we entrust the people of Ukraine to you.

Protect them in this time of peril; let them know not death but life; not slavery but freedom.

You are Father of all; we are brothers and sisters.

Give us the strength to live that truth in love, choosing peace not war.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

2^nd Reading (1 Tim 2:1-8)
A reading from the first letter of St Paul to Timothy.
My advice is that, first of all, there should be prayers offered for everyone – petitions, intercessions and thanksgiving – and especially for kings and others in authority, so that we may be able to live religious and reverent lives in peace and quiet. To do this is right, and will please God our saviour: he wants everyone to be saved and reach full knowledge of the truth. For there is only one God, and there is only one mediator between God and mankind, himself a man, Christ Jesus, who sacrificed himself as a ransom for them all. He is the evidence of this, sent at the appointed time, and I have been named a herald and apostle of it and – I am telling the truth and no lie – a teacher of the faith and the truth to the pagans. In every place, then, I want the men to lift their hands up reverently in prayer, with no anger or argument.

MESSAGE FROM MOST REVEREND ARCHBISHOP PETER A COMENSOLI ON THE DEATH OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II
“In 1952 before her Coronation, a young Elizabeth gave her first Christmas Address requesting our prayers – ‘that I may faithfully serve Him and you, all the days of my life’. With sadness and gratitude, we now reflect on the fulfilment of those very words and offer our prayers and condolences for a Monarch who has lived a life of commitment and devotion to her people through great change and upheaval. I join with Pope Francis and all those who mourn her loss in paying my respects to Her Majesty as a woman of deep Christian faith, whose leadership and service was shaped by the anchor of Jesus Christ in her life. May she rest in peace, with her King eternally.”

The death of Queen Elizabeth II, after a long reign marked by extraordinary constancy, fidelity, courage and service, will bring great sadness to many people in Australia, including members of the Catholic community. Anyone who does not carry his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. ‘And indeed, which of you here, intending to build a tower, would not first sit down and work out the cost to see if he had enough to complete it? Otherwise, if he laid the foundation and then found himself unable to finish the work, the onlookers would all start making fun of him and saying, “Here is a man who started to build and was unable to finish.” Or again, what king marching to war against another king would not first sit down and consider whether with ten thousand men he could stand up to the other who advanced against him with twenty thousand? DEVOTIONAL PRAYER FOR AUGUST
PRAYER FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE SUNDAY

Loving God, you made each of us in your image and likeness. Open our eyes to recognise one another as equals, replacing domination and control, violence, and abuse, with mutuality, reciprocity, respect, and freedom. Help us to love like you. Jesus Christ, you rejected the use of religious traditions to justify violence. Teach us to unmask manipulations of our faith used to justify violent, abusive, or coercive behaviour. Teach us to be people who show tenderness, respect and care for others as you did. Holy Spirit, you are with us always, showing us the way. Move us to assist those who experience violence and abuse, and support their call for justice. Empower us to hold perpetrators of violence and abuse responsible, encouraging them to change their behaviour. Amen.

A more distinguished person than you may have been invited, and the person who invited you both may come and say, “Give up your place to this man.” And then, to your embarrassment, you would have to go and take the lowest place. No; when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place and sit there, so that, when your host comes, he may say, “My friend, move up higher.” In that way, everyone with you at the table will see you honoured. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the man who humbles himself will be exalted.’ Then he said to his host, ‘When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not ask your friends, brothers, relations or rich neighbours, for fear they repay your courtesy by inviting you in return. We congratulate the children from St. Peter's Sunday School who will receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion this Sunday. APPEAL FOR SRI LANKA
A Special collection will be taken at all masses this weekend for Sri Lanka, where there is great turmoil due to the political and socio-economic situation. The proceeds will be sent to the Diocese of Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka. Your donations will be used to provide food for needy families.

FATHER'S DAY – SUNDAY 4^THSEPTEMBER
Father Vincent will be giving a special blessing to Fathers at all the weekend Masses. Father’s Day Appeal collection will take place at all masses on the weekend of 3^rd / 4^th September. The Appeal helps raise funds to enable the Foundation to care for our retired priests.

A reading from the prophet Jeremiah.
The king’s leading men spoke to the king. ‘Let Jeremiah be put to death: he is unquestionably disheartening the remaining soldiers in the city, and all the people too, by talking like this. The fellow does not have the welfare of this people at heart so much as its ruin.’ ‘He is in your hands as you know,’ King Zedekiah answered ‘for the king is powerless against you.’ So they took Jeremiah and threw him into the well of Prince Malchiah in the Court of the Guard, letting him down with ropes. There was no water in the well, only mud, and into the mud Jeremiah sank. Most loving God, we thank You for our country Australia and our own Saint Mary MacKillop, a woman who faced life’s challenges with faith and courage and witnessed to the human dignity of all life here in Australia.

1^st Reading (Heb 11:1-2, 8-19)
A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Hebrews.
Only faith can guarantee the blessings that we hope for, or prove the existence of the realities that at present remain unseen. It was for faith that our ancestors were commended. It was by faith that Abraham obeyed the call to set out for a country that was the inheritance given to him and his descendants, and that he set out without knowing where he was going. By faith he arrived, as a foreigner, in the Promised Land, and lived there as if in a strange country, with Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. They lived there in tents while he looked forward to a city founded, designed and built by God. It was equally by faith that Sarah, in spite of being past the age, was made able to conceive, because she believed that he who had made the promise would be faithful to it. Because of this, there came from one man, and one who was already as good as dead himself, more descendants than could be counted, as many as the stars of heaven or the grains of sand on the seashore.

The latest Covid Update from the Archdiocese recommends that masks are worn indoors. Due to the increase in COVID cases and the ‘FLU, Father Vincent recommends that everyone wear a face mask in church. THE RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA) is a program for anyone interested in becoming a Catholic and receiving the Sacraments. Meetings will be held every Tuesday at 7:00pm in the Theatrette commencing on 23^rd August at St Peter Apostle Mission Parish. If you or anyone you know is interested, you are welcome to come along. WINTER FIESTA & WORLD YOUTH DAY 2023 LAUNCH
An invitation for youth to join Archbishop Peter Comensoli for SIX30 Holy Hour followed by a Winter Fiesta in the grounds of the Cathedral. PRAYER FOR GRANDPARENTS & THE ELDERLY

I give thanks to you, Lord for the blessing of a long life. For, to those who take refuge in You, grant always to bear fruit.

Forgive, O Lord, resignation and disillusionment, but forsake me not when my strength declines.

Teach me to look with hope to the future you give me, to the mission you entrust to me and to sing your praises without end.

Make me a tender craftsman of Your revolution, to guard with love my grandchildren and all the little ones who seek shelter in You.

Protect, O Lord, Pope Francis, and grant Thy Church to deliver the world from loneliness. Direct our steps in the way of peace. Amen.

A reading from the book of Genesis.
The Lord said, ‘How great an outcry there is against Sodom and Gomorrah! How grievous is their sin! I propose to go down and see whether or not they have done all that is alleged in the outcry against them that has come up to me. I am determined to know.’ The men left there and went to Sodom while Abraham remained standing before the Lord. Approaching him he said, ‘Are you really going to destroy the just man with the sinner? Perhaps there are fifty just men in the town. Will you really overwhelm them, will you not spare the place for the fifty just men in it? Do not think of doing such a thing: to kill the just man with the sinner, treating just and sinner alike! Do not think of it! Will the judge of the whole earth not administer justice?’ the Lord replied, ‘If at Sodom I find fifty just men in the town, I will spare the whole place because of them.’ Abraham replied, ‘I am bold indeed to speak like this to my Lord, I who am dust and ashes. Once Jesus was in a certain place praying, and when he had finished one of his disciples said, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.’ He said to them, ‘Say this when you pray: “Father, may your name be held holy, your kingdom come; give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive each one who is in debt to us. And do not put us to the test.”’ He also said to them, ‘Suppose one of you has a friend and goes to him in the middle of the night to say, “My friend, lend me three loaves, because a friend of mine on his travels has just arrived at my house and I have nothing to offer him”; and the man answers from inside the house, “Do not bother me. The door is bolted now, and my children and I are in bed; I cannot get up to give it you.” I tell you, if the man does not get up and give it him for friendship’s sake, persistence will be enough to make him get up and give his friend all he wants. ‘So I say to you: Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. For the one who asks always receives; the one who searches always finds; the one who knocks will always have the door opened to him. What father among you would hand his son a stone when he asked for bread? Or hand him a snake instead of a fish? Or hand him a scorpion if he asked for an egg? If you then, who are evil, know how to give your children what is good, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!’
