WE CARE – Responding to the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act Victoria
On 19 June 2019, the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act (VAD) came into effect in Victoria. It legalises euthanasia and assisted suicide. Despite what the law may say, our Christian tradition affirms that every life, including those of the sick and suffering, is sacred. Euthanasia and assisted suicide are never part of end of life care. Pope Francis has encouraged ordinary Catholics everywhere to resist euthanasia and to protect the old, the young and the vulnerable from being cast aside in a “throw-away culture.” We are called to follow Christ by accompanying people with compassion, sharing hope not fear. The Bishops of the Catholic dioceses of Melbourne, Ballarat, Sale and Sandhurst, echoing Pope Francis, have published a pastoral letter including practical guidance on ways we can be conscientious objectors to euthanasia. Copies of the letter are available in the church foyer. Please take a copy and share it.

There will be a third Collection next weekend June 29/30 for Peter’s Pence – the annual collection for the Holy Father. A brief explanation of the origins of the Peter’s Pence Collection is given below:

In 1871, Pope Pius IX formalized the practice of lay members of Church and "other persons of good will" – providing financial support directly to the Roman See. In general, contributions go to the local parish or diocese, who then provide contributions to support higher level offices. Collections for Peter's Pence go directly to Rome. Pius IX approved this practice in the encyclical Saepe Venerabilis, issued on 5 August 1871. The money collected is today used by the pope for philanthropic purposes. At present, this collection is taken each year on the Sunday closest to 29 June, the Solemnity of the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, according to the Roman Church.

We pray for Rosie Garcia, Misael Manalaysay Jr., Crecentia Fernando and all who have passed away recently.

We pray for Shalee Serrano, Antonietta De Quattro, Rudolfo & Corazon Dayao, Augustino, Josephine, Carmena & Nicole Cutajar, Maria Malovrh, Peppi Rosaria, Sabrina Serlazzo, Robert Wells, Edith Platel, Jenny Vanderveldt, Claro Leyco, Harry John, Christos Mary and all whose anniversaries occur at this time.

We pray for Kevin McLoughlin, Leo Linehan, Gary Spotswood, Sean Donaldson, Bob Meehan, Liam Parr, Lucy Ballan, Irene Jones, Thais Long, Sr. Eileen Jones, Angela & Frank O’Brien, Barbara Brown, Kath Meddings, Josephine Buttigieg, Edith Street, Chantelle Saunders, Glenna Pereira, Phylis Mills, Paul Camilleri, Zandi Falzon, Helga Jacob, Vonnie Pritchard, Tim Cooper, Hannah Czerniawsky, Camille Miles, Lorraine Vella, Atima Chakraborty, Paul Camilleri, Magdalena Marquez, Ashley Azavedo, Martina Serrao, Wilfredo Compuesto, Frank Maher, Melissa Galea, Jean Cameron, Ventious Fernando, Adrian Wilson and all who are ill in our Parish.
