LETTER FROM ARCHBISHOP PETER COMENSOLI
Dear Friends & Colleagues,

To all those facing the uncertainty, danger and devastation of the fires to the north, please know that you are in our heartfelt prayers. We ask the Holy Spirit to bring renewed courage and strength to those who give so much of themselves at these critical times – our people at the fire fronts, those ministering and attending the injured, those caring for the homeless and displaced, those who will continue to bring support long after the last ember has gone out. We place our trust in you Lord, to shelter and protect our loved ones, friends, and all those who need your help. St. Vincent de Paul are on the ground throughout our communities providing support in those life-giving ways that people need in times of disaster and tragedy. May I encourage our people of Melbourne and beyond to support the Vinnies Bushfire Appeal through www.vinnies.org.au or through your local parish.

With every grace and blessing, I remain,
Yours Sincerely in Christ Jesus,
Most Rev Peter A Comensoli, Archbishop of Melbourne

The overall aim of the Mission Program is twofold.

  1. To assist in the individual faith education and renewal of parishioners.

REFLECTION FOR 29TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
“…proclaim the word, be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient...” (2 Timothy 4:2)
It is not always convenient to be a good steward, especially when all the temptations of our busy and materialistic world get in the way. Now add our own pride and ego into the equation and living a stewardship lifestyle may be downright uncomfortable! Remember, God didn’t call us to be comfortable. He called us to be faithful.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION FOR 28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
“Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” (Luke 17:18)
Most of us live “easy” lives. We have food, shelter, and clothing. We go on vacation every year and own a car or two. Most of us take this all for granted. Did you ever notice that people with the least amount of possessions are usually the most grateful? Shouldn’t this be the other way around? Take time every day and thank God for all He has given you.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION FOR 26TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
“My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established…” (Luke 16:25-26)

When God created the world He declared that it was good and He gave it to all mankind for us to enjoy. However, over the years we have created a chasm between those who have great gifts and those who do not. In today’s Gospel we see that with our own generosity we must bridge that gap between those who have much and those who have little or we may find ourselves on the wrong side of the chasm in the next life.

SOCIAL JUSTICE STATEMENT 2019–2020
We celebrate Social Justice Sunday on 29 September. This year, the Australian Bishops’ Social Justice Statement is titled: ‘Making it Real: Genuine human encounter in our digital world’. It shares Pope Francis’ challenge to us to ‘boldly become citizens of the digital world’. It points out that we are called not just to be inhabitants of this world, but active citizens shaping it. More information from (www.socialjustice.catholic.org.au) or call (02) 8306 3499.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION FOR 25TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
“No servant can serve two masters. He will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (wealth).” (Luke 16:13)
Is money a “god” that you put before God? Giving money to support the Church and other charities is a pillar of our faith, just like attending Mass every Sunday and participating in parish ministry. Giving money frees us from being a slave to money. It increases our dependence on God and our trust that God will provide all that we need.

TWEET FROM POPE FRANCIS
St. Paul asks us to pray “for all in authority”, (1 Tim 2:2). We must learn to do this, even for politicians with whom we disagree. Christians must pray for all people in government that they may work for the common good.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION FOR 24TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Everything I have is yours.” (Luke 15:31)
Our Heavenly Father gives us everything, including the chance to share in His eternal kingdom. Yet, like the Prodigal Son we are often lured away by the materialism of our society. Do we really want to turn our backs on all that God offers in exchange for a material wealth that has no lasting value?
