The 2018-19 session of the Holy Spirit Interactive (HSI) School of Discipleship commenced on 12th August. This is a faith outreach program aimed to teach members more about our Catholic faith with three purposes – to learn it, live it and share it. The school has been successfully running for the past 2 consecutive years in our parish and members have testified to growing both spiritually and personally. We are currently in our fourth week and the response has been good. The first five weeks are a come and see whether you would like to join. We meet every Sunday at 6:15pm in the community centre. LETTER TO THE FAITHFUL FROM THE ARCHBISHOP OF MELBOURNE
Referring to the letter from Pope Francis on the subject of clerical sexual abuse and the ecclesial cover-up that has often accompanied, our Archbishop, the Most Rev Peter Comensoli makes some of the following comments. To see the full letter, please check the noticeboards.  Copies of the letter are also available at the rear of the church.

“I associate myself with these words, and the whole content of Pope’s Francis’ letter: https://www.vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/2018-08/pope-francis-letter-people-of-god-sexual-abuse.html.

No words of apology – while always needed – will ever be enough to right the evil done to those who have been abused, and those who were not listened to and believed. Efforts to repair the harm done – while entirely necessary – cannot overcome the evil perpetrated upon innocent children and vulnerable adults, and the harm experienced by families and communities.

Therefore, and looking ahead, it falls to me, as your Archbishop, to ensure that our local Church in Melbourne is unequivocally committed to attending to the harm done, prioritising the dignity and care of all who are young and vulnerable, rebuilding trust among our people, and creating safe environments in our communities, agencies and organisations. This is the way of Jesus Christ. It must be my way. And I invite you to join with me in making it our common Gospel way.

PARISH REFURBISHMENT
We are pleased to announce that the parish refurbishment works are complete and all masses will now be held in the church. The School and the Parish have also taken the opportunity to review repair to the entire car park which will result in better lanes and additional car parks. As such vehicle access to the church will be restricted. We expect the car park to be repaired in the upcoming school holidays. We do understand that this will cause further inconvenience in movement of traffic to the church and thank you for your continued understanding.

PARISH NEWS

POPE FRANCIS APPOINTS BISHOP PETER A. COMENSOLI THE NINTH ARCHBISHOP OF MELBOURNE
The Holy Father Pope Francis has appointed Most Reverend Bishop Peter Andrew Comensoli of the Diocese of Broken Bay as the ninth Archbishop of Melbourne. Archbishop-elect Comensoli said he was deeply moved by the Holy Father’s trust in making this appointment. ‘The life of Christian discipleship is a precious gift, developed through hearing and responding to God’s call. In accepting this call to be a new missionary among God’s people of the Archdiocese of Melbourne, I readily acknowledge the great responsibility entrusted to me, along with the frailties I carry,’ he said. ‘To the good people of Melbourne, let me say that you are already in my prayers. As I come among you I place my trust in the tender encouragement of Jesus. We are pilgrims together in the Lord’s vineyard. As we take these first steps in friendship, may we anchor our lives to his Gospel. I look forward to getting to know you. And, as a northerner, I will need some guidance around that mysterious code of football called AFL!’

In announcing the appointment, Pope Francis also accepted Archbishop Denis Hart’s resignation after 17 years as Archbishop of Melbourne. Archbishop Hart will serve as Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese until the installation of Archbishop-elect Comensoli on Wednesday 1 August.

‘Archbishop Hart described Archbishop-elect Comensoli as ‘a deeply pastoral and faith-filled man’. ‘He will bring many gifts to serve our people. I join the community in the Archdiocese of Melbourne in our prayerful and heartfelt welcome to him,’ said Archbishop Hart.

CHURCH REFURBISHMENT PROJECT
Unfortunately there have been further delays in completion of our church refurbishment project on account of issues found in the main structure of the foyer. This has resulted in new steel structure being designed and installed. Most major issues have now been resolved and the project is progressing well. The next major works relate to roof replacement which is expected to be undertaken in the next two weeks. The Builder and Architect has advised us of a new completion date of end August 2018 subject to normal weather conditions. We are sorry for the inconvenience this delay is causing and thank you for your patience. If there are any further changes to the timetable we will keep parishioners updated.

PARISH NEWS
