TWEET FROM POPE FRANCIS
God has placed this plan in our hearts and in all creation: to love Him, our brothers and sisters, and the whole world, and to find true happiness in this love.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER
May 19, 2019 – 5th Sunday of Easter
“I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another." (John 13:34)

It is easy to love someone when they love you back. But it takes strength and courage to love someone when we feel unappreciated, used or feel our opinion doesn’t matter. It takes courage to “love my neighbor” when he may be someone I don’t like, someone I don’t know or someone that doesn’t look like me.

MASS FOR EXPECTANT MOTHERS

PRAYER FOR MOTHERS ON MOTHERS DAY
Loving God, we pray for our mothers, who cared for us when we were helpless; who comforted us when we were hurt; whose love and care we often take for granted. Today we pray for those who are grieving the loss of their mother, mothers who grieve the loss of their children, those who never knew their biological mother and now yearn for her and those who have experienced the wonder of an adopted mother’s love. Lord give all mothers, grandmothers, aunts and godmothers a special blessing. Keep us united with you and with each other, so that we can be and become all that we are meant to be.

GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY, MAY 12TH World Day of Prayer for Vocations
Today is the World Day of Vocations. Pope Francis tells us: “There can be no greater joy than to risk one’s life for the Lord! I would like to say this especially to you, the young. Do not be deaf to the Lord’s call. If he calls you to follow this path, do not pull your oars into the boat, but trust him”. Let us pray for the young people in our community, and in our families and circle of friends. May our prayers help them to be open to the Lord’s call to consecrated life or priesthood.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER
May 12, 2019 – 4th Sunday of Easter
“The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 13:52)
The disciples heard Our Lord’s call and were able to spread the Gospel message with strength and vitality. We, too, can experience that same joy if we make room for the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts. When we use our gifts in the way that God intends, He fills us with supernatural joy. A joy that others notice and are attracted to.

TWEET FROM POPE FRANCIS
In many countries May is the month of Mary. May the Mother of God accompany us and protect Christians in fighting against the forces of evil. Let us entrust ourselves to her and pray for the Church and for peace in the world..

GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY, MAY 12TH World Day of Prayer for Vocations
Pope Francis – Message for 2019 World Day of Vocations
‘The Lord’s call is not an intrusion of God in our freedom; it is not a ‘cage’ or a burden to be borne. On the contrary, it is the loving initiative whereby God encounters us and invites us to be part of a great undertaking. So we must love her (the Church), even when we see her face marred by human frailty and sin, and we must help to make her ever more beautiful and radiant, so that she can bear witness to God’s love in the world.

All of us are challenged to show our love for Jesus and others. “Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’(John 20:21)

Peace – the first gift of the risen Lord. Just as Jesus sent the apostles out into the world, so too, He sends us. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to be grateful and generous. Look for opportunities to share His peace, not only within our local parish boundaries, but outside of them as well. In giving, we receive the peace of Jesus Christ.

EASTER MESSAGE 2019 from Most Rev Peter A. Comensoli
Archbishop of Melbourne
Happy Easter, friends in Christ. Happy Easter in the name of Jesus, the Risen One. When Jesus appeared among his friends after the Resurrection, the first thing he did was to show them the wounds of his crucifixion. ‘Here,’ he said to them, ‘see my once-nailed hands and feet; look at my pierced side.’ The person who stood before his friends was no ghostly hologram of someone they once knew; it was Jesus himself, alive. After three days in the tomb, and now brimming with divine energy, Jesus did not hide the wounds of his death from his friends. Instead, he carried them with him into the resurrected life. Those transfigured wounds of Jesus matter to us, his friends today. His death was no fake; his resurrection no trick. With his own body—once wounded in death—he now brings new possibilities to us all. Our way ahead with Him does not mean a rejection of our past, but a transfiguration of it. Jesus is our hope of a new path. This Easter, all of us are being invited to taste something of this joy of the Resurrection, to look on Jesus’ resurrected wounds and see hope for the world. This is because our own wounds and sorrows, our griefs and struggles, our anguishes and angers, have all been absorbed into the healed wounds of Jesus. So begins my first sharing in the Easter Season with you as your archbishop. I’ve been looking forward to it, because we have been walking through loss and grief in the Church here in Melbourne, and we are so in need of the Lord who wants us to share his Easter joy. Christ is alive; and he wants us to be alive. The Risen Lord, who will never abandon his people, is offering us the strength to set out on a new path with him. As shattered and as wounded as our local Church can seem, the Risen Lord, in his gloriously wounded body, is inviting us to share in his life and to walk with him.

FUNERALS on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday are forbidden. Funerals on these days are celebrated with the Liturgy of the Word and without the Eucharistic Sacrifice.

WEDDINGS are discouraged on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. If they are required, no decorations including flowers, no music or Nuptial Mass will be permitted.

IMPORTANT LENTEN INFORMATION
Ash Wednesday & Good Friday are days of Fasting and Abstinence from meat. All other Fridays, except solemnities, the law of the common practice of penance is fulfilled by any one of the following:

  1. Prayer eg – Mass attendance; family prayer; a visit to a church or chapel; reading the Bible; making Stations of the Cross; praying the Rosary, etc.
  2. Self Denial eg – not eating meat, sweets or dessert; giving up entertainment to spend time with family; limiting food and drink to give to the poor of ones own country or elsewhere, etc. Project Compassion is a major means of expressing self-denial in Australia.
  3. Helping Others eg – special attention to someone who is poort, sick, elderly, lonely or overburdened, etc.
  • All who have turned 18 and who are not yet 60 are bound to fast. All who have completed 14 are bound to abstain. (Canon 1252)
  • Lent is a time of penance. During this season the faithful are exhorted to devote themselves in a special manner to prayer, to engage in works of piety and charity and to deny themselves.
  • All faithful are obliged to receive Holy Communion at least once a year. This precept must be fulfilled between Ash Wednesday 6 March 19 and Trinity Sunday, 16 June 19 unless for a good reason it is fulfilled at another time during the year.

The wonderful gift of the Lord’s merciful love is offered in a special way in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Lent is a most appropriate time to receive this Sacrament. All who have reached the age of discretion are bound faithfully to confess their grave sins at least once a year.
