IMPORTANT LENTEN INFORMATION
Ash Wednesday & Good Friday are days of Fasting and Abstinence from meat. All other Fridays, except solemnities, the law of the common practice of penance is fulfilled by any one of the following:

  1. Prayer eg – Mass attendance; family prayer; a visit to a church or chapel; reading the Bible; making Stations of the Cross; praying the Rosary, etc.
  2. Self Denial eg – not eating meat, sweets or dessert; giving up entertainment to spend time with family; limiting food and drink to give to the poor of ones own country or elsewhere, etc. Project Compassion is a major means of expressing self-denial in Australia.
  3. Helping Others eg – special attention to someone who is poort, sick, elderly, lonely or overburdened, etc.
  • All who have turned 18 and who are not yet 60 are bound to fast. All who have completed 14 are bound to abstain. (Canon 1252)
  • Lent is a time of penance. During this season the faithful are exhorted to devote themselves in a special manner to prayer, to engage in works of piety and charity and to deny themselves.
  • All faithful are obliged to receive Holy Communion at least once a year. This precept must be fulfilled between Ash Wednesday 6 March 19 and Trinity Sunday, 16 June 19 unless for a good reason it is fulfilled at another time during the year.

The wonderful gift of the Lord’s merciful love is offered in a special way in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Lent is a most appropriate time to receive this Sacrament. All who have reached the age of discretion are bound faithfully to confess their grave sins at least once a year.

FUNERALS on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday are forbidden. Funerals on these days are celebrated with the Liturgy of the Word and without the Eucharistic Sacrifice.

IMPORTANT LENTEN INFORMATION
The Lenten season has a twofold character:

  1. It recalls baptism or prepares for it.
  2. It stresses a penitential spirit

By these means especially, Lent readies the faithful for celebrating the paschal mystery after a period of closer attention to the Word of God, and more ardent prayer. In the liturgy itself and in the liturgy-centred instructions, these baptismal and penitential themes should be more pronounced. Hence:

  1. Wider use is to be made of baptismal features proper to the Lenten liturgy …
  2. The same approach holds for the penitential elements…

During Lent, penance should not be only internal and individual but also external and social … In any event, let the paschal fast be kept sacred. It should be observed everywhere on Good Friday and, where possible prolonged throughout Holy Saturday, so that the joys of the Sunday of the resurrection may be visited on uplifted and responsive spirits.

PROJECT COMPASSION BOXES are located in the foyer. Please collect one after Mass. Thank you.

LETTER FROM BISHOP MARK EDWARDS
Dear Fr Vincent and members of St Peter’s Parish.
Over the last week I have been in St Peter’s and have enjoyed being a part of its life.  I visited the primary school, talked with the Parish Pastoral Council and the Finance Committee, and met with Fr Vincent, visited some of the sick of the parish, met with the Sunday School children, the youth group and the young adults group, celebrated two weekday Masses and the four of the Sunday Masses. I found an active parish with a vibrant devotional and faith life, a strong sense of community and a healthy desire to pass the faith on to others.  The primary school is doing much good in the community and is an important part of the parish.  It is a powerful way in which the parish reaches out to the next generation and to the wider community.  The teachers are dedicated, caring and devoted and show empathy and compassion. It is important that all of us take responsibility for the life of our community and I encourage the school and wider parish to continue to offer opportunities for the families in the school to become even more involved.  Building community in our area is important.  Let us continue to invite those who receive to give back. During my visitation, Fr Vincent asked for suggestions about how the parish could be even better.  It would be inappropriate for me to make particular concrete suggestions after only a week in the parish.  I propose that the parish undertake a strategic plan which identifies two, or at the most three, areas in which you discern that God is calling you to become even better and set two, three or four goals that will stretch the community in each of these areas and that you commit to these. I want to thank Fr Vincent for his pastoral care, thoughtfulness and community building. He is warm, compassionate, committed, generous, hard-working, constant, cheerful, and faith-filled.  I thank him for who he is and what he is doing for the community of St Peter’s. I also thank the parishioners I met and teachers for their love for the Church, the parish and their commitment to its well-being.  I enjoyed my visit very much and look forward to future visits.

Bishop Mark Edwards

Dear friends, this week the lifting of the suppression order concerning Cardinal George Pell’s trial and the sustained media focus has made for a challenging time for the Catholic Church in Melbourne. We will all have different ways of both responding to this news and making sense of it.

For some it heralds another chapter in the already painful journey that Catholics have been a part of over the last few years. Some of us may feel upset and saddened by the news. Some of us may just feel very weary about the way our Church is being portrayed in the media. There are those in our community who have been abused and the story touches on and may re-open already raw wounds.

On this the last Sunday prior to Lent we gather around the table of the Lord. We pray that God will continue to journey with us as we search to understand, accept and acknowledge the challenges of our times. We hold in our thoughts and prayers all those who have suffered abuse within the Church.
Fr. Vincent John CMI

STATEMENT FROM ARCHBISHOP MARK COLERIDGE
President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference (ACBC)
Please see noticeboard.

STATEMENT FROM ARCHBISHOP PETER COMENSOLI (Archbishop of Melbourne)
As is now publicly known, Cardinal George Pell has been found guilty of historical sexual crimes relating to two young people at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Melbourne. This follows two trials, the first of which could not reach a verdict. While acknowledging the judgement of the jury, I join many people who have been surprised and shaken by the outcome of the second trial. I fully respect the ongoing judicial process, noting that Cardinal Pell continues to protest his innocence. An appeal against the verdict has been lodged. It is important that we now await the outcome of this appeal, respectful of the ongoing legal proceedings. All other charges relating to Cardinal Pell, except those subject of the appeal, have been discontinued. My thoughts and prayers are with all victims who have been abused by clergy, religious and lay people in the Archdiocese of Melbourne at this challenging time, and I renew my personal commitment to do all I can to ensure victims of such abuse in Melbourne receive justice and healing. At this time, I also acknowledge all in the Catholic Church who are walking with survivors and communities harmed by the scourge of abuse, and who are committed to building a culture of safety for our children and vulnerable people. At this time, may I assure you that I keep all involved in my prayer.

BAPTISM OF THE LORD – 13TH JANUARY 2019
The call given to each of us at our Baptism is unique. At Baptism we were made 'priests, prophets and kings' as the Rite of Baptism reminds us. As we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord this weekend, reflect on the call given to us at our baptism, no matter how long ago it was. As baptised Christians, we are called to spread the 'Good News' and grow in holiness. Let us pray today for the young members of our families and our congregations and our secondary schools: that they will live out this call in a radical way and respond to whatever the Lord calls them to, perhaps consecrated life or priesthood.
